really. as someone else pointed out on another thread, live seems to be catering not one, not two, but three different markets.
first off, weve got what live is all about: LIVE. which they imo, should be focusing more on, instead of the other two..
then after that, weve got the other thing, the DAW part. sequencing, video support (wtf?) and whatnots.
and no.., theyre going the third one: content.
buy live, get a bunch load of samples, and a bunch load of instruments and whatnots.
for me, id be happy to see a mifi lfo, a track grouping/folder option and an ability to record automation in session view and ill be fine.
remember the name, eh?
ableton LIVE.
not ableton sequencer/studio.
shape up dammit.
speaking of, what the hell happened to the abe/cycling co-op?
max is great for live performances, for generative things etc, live is moving more and more toward something else (read studio work), and less and less towards the whole live perfomance thing.
dammit. ill just revert to something else, like buzz tracker or energy xt.

oh my god, what the hell are you on really?ethios4 wrote:If you don't like it, don't buy it!
If you expect every wish to be fulfilled, and everything to work you the way you want, you'll probably be disappointed.
If you think you can do better, start your own software company, revolutionize the way music is made with your new product, release everything for really cheap, with lifetime free upgrades, and include every feature everyone wants. Lots of people will buy it, or at least own a cracked copy!
first off, let me just say that (although i dont support or dis-support(can you say that really?)) it, cracked programs does server a purpose as much as anything else.. ive been a longtime user of program X, and although ive never bought it myself due to lack of money (dont worry, i never use it for anything else then playing arouind at home, and no, its not live.., ive got about 20 people buying it because i have been promoting it for them.. for free, becuase the software is so great..surely i would have done while using a demo version which disables about.. well.. everything.
hardly.
second off, i agree with the OP, the fact that they are releasing a new version each X or so which cost you an additional arm and a leg is just silly. you buy it, you own it, case closed.
you shouldnt have to buy it, then re-buy it every majorr update (or version if that tickles you).
just the fact that they now with live 7 is focusing on content rather then critical features and/or bugfixes tells me that ableton have lost the whole interest to their customers, and is currently in it for the money only..
imo, live 7 is one of the biggest letdowns ever in terms of software for musicians. so much potentional, but oh so much.. well.. crap.
drum machines looks nice though, but really. give me 5 minutes and ill build a drumrack that would kick that machines ass..
cycling 74 co-op my ass.
shame on you.
If they frequently release a version you feel an urge to buy, they're clearly doing it just to get your money, and that's bad. If they release a version you wouldn't buy in a million years, they're clearly doing it just to get someone else's money, and that's bad.friend_kami wrote:you shouldnt have to buy it, then re-buy it every majorr update (or version if that tickles you).

In my opinion, your post was one of the emptiest pieces of Live 7 whining yet. Are you honestly saying that you can't see any realistic value to any Live users in this release? Didn't think so. But you sure didn't say anything positive about itfriend_kami wrote:imo, live 7 is one of the biggest letdowns ever in terms of software for musicians. so much potentional, but oh so much.. well.. crap.
Actually, I don't think this is true at all, I think it is basically an issue of marketing (and perhaps will be a mistake on the abe's marketing team's part). There is a lot of content that comes with this update, but it is basically all licensed, including the new synthesizers. In fact (though I haven't tried to count features or anything) to me this update, factoring out the licensed content, seems more featureful than the L5-L6 update, where it seemed pretty clear that a lot of internal developer time was spent on the (non-licensed) Sampler (well, who knows if this is actually true, but that's what it seemed like). I have to admit that the way the licensed content is being marketed got my hackles up too (where it is not at all clear that it is licensed), but when I went and really looked at the details this is the conclusion I have come to.friend_kami wrote:just the fact that they now with live 7 is focusing on content rather then critical features and/or bugfixes
They may not be the features you wanted, of course, but that's another issue.

I've just checked that Live 7 will be released soon. As Logic 8 and Reason 4, Ableton have to make new version too.
... But : everything done for the next level will be put in an update. As I'm an owner of Live since version 4, I've pid for version 4, 5 and 6 (each time : 99 € !)
All I see in version 7 is improvement of many bugs and missed elements since live 5 (REX file, better midi sync, video export, better RAM management, etc)
And what about the handshake between Ableton & Cyclin'74 ? I hoped so much to see MAX/MSP objects integration in Live 7... That's a great improvement ! Even a better way to experiment things on Live rather than fill hard disks with tons of gigabits of samples !!!
Well - I'm not worried : I'm just getting mad !
See Ya' all !

If you don't like Live, you can use other sofware.

I agree with you. i dont see this as a full new release it should have been a six update. This forum is filled with fanboys so getting any objective points of view is difficult but your absaloutely correct this is a poor update across the board. The excitement generated by drum rack is laughable considering theres so much vsts out there that can do what rack wants to do. Its a shame that one feature is all they talk about here.lezef wrote:Hi,

There are also plenty of whiners on the forum that can't seem to understand that development work needs to be paid for. If you don't like it, vote with your wallet, that's the way it works.mercyplease wrote:I agree with you. i dont see this as a full new release it should have been a six update. I've been on this forum for over 4 years now, and it's the same with every update/version. A few people whine that its a worthless update, that Ableton has lost its way, that its all about marketing, that they just bought the previous version and they're pissed, that Live is catering too much to DJs, that Live isnt catering enough to DJs, that its the worst update ever, that Ableton will soon be bankrupt....and yet most of the people whining are users that have come on since then. What does that tell you?
All that being said, the new content offerings interest me not at all, and I may not buy the instruments. I am very very excited about the basic upgrade though....I feel it will really help me push my live performance and studio work forward.

that's funny, I know my studio work will be helped by it, but I see hardly anything useful for performance...glu wrote:+1ethios4 wrote: All that being said, the new content offerings interest me not at all, and I may not buy the instruments. true, I was adding 1 to the studio bit and the "new content offerings interest me not at all" part.
for me, going from 5--> 7 will be nice since I will finally have racks and macros- although I still don't understand why Abe's didn't do more for macros with this update, -- C74 everyone is hoping...
