OK, I'll take some time...
the key is that FM is "oscillators oscillating oscillators", analog is not.
look at Analog
it's 2 oscillators that run through a filter, an amplitude section and out the master. you can mix the chains together a bit, send OSC1 to OSC2's filter and whatnot but the oscillators stay relatively pure.
look at Operator, check the routing section.
now you see that you can make OSC A oscillate OSC B and OSC C etc. what you have is Frequency Modulation, the same science behind FM radios, one signal gets modulated by another.
the term 'virtual' for analog started because analog synths used to be ANALOG, there was an analog circuit that spit out an analog sine wave (or triangle or square), old school stuff that would drift with temperature and whatnot. then synth makers started making analog synths with 1s and 0s, this was good because they wouldn't drift and stuff but a close look at the outputted oscillator showed it was no longer a purely analog signal, it had little steps to it. I assume you know where I'm coming from, how digital signals look like steps, they're quantized.
the sounds of FM vs. analog are different styles, read those wiki pages for ideas on which synths had which sound. those are the two main kinds of synths, then there's wavetable synths and I'm probably forgetting a type or two but those are the main ones.
hth.
