Edirol FA-66 and Ableton Live help please?

ok, so im running ableton 6 through a Dell Inspiron laptop dualcore 1.8 processors and 1G of ram with the edirol fa-66 and i cant seem to get any of it set up right, there is huge amounts of latency when recording into live. All of the input levels into live are very very faint and i suffer huge pops clicks and dropouts...if someone could help i would be so grateful.
