Latency - Are these normal read outs?

Post by poops » Tue Oct 09, 2007 7:45 am

I was watching a LIVE tutorial and
it showed:

256 samples

output latency 5.00 ms or so
input latency 5.00 ms or so.

On my mac using core audio

I have 256 samples

output latency is 7.28 ms
input latency is 7.23 ms

Is that normal for my setup

Also I have a sample rate of 44100

I'm still learning, please be easy on me. thanks

make a big set, if it doesn't crackle and pop, under 10mS is groovy. if you mostly do DJ stuff and launch clips you can go higher.

if it crackles and pops, increase the buffer size, set plug in buffer to 'same as audio'. on PC ASIO4ALL yields good results. larger buffers means more latency.

higher sample rate means higher CPU meter, it's a balance.

my problem seems to be not cracks and pops under 10ms ,
but at say 8ms

when i hit the keys on my midi controller and "record" midi notes in the midi editor , the timing seems to be off, sort of a delay I get. Is that the latency. I want to record my midi performance "live" no quantization at all. So when I play it sounds good, and i dont fwwl a "delay" in my playing , but when i play it back the timing is off, its very slight but its noticeable to me. I see it mostly with recording loops, I play right on the "one" beat, and the midi note always places itself on the end of the fourth beat in the bar.

maybe im trippin.

You are not tripping, the most radical solution- get RME with new express card, Any other card will be much, much worse, Not only RME has that amazing audio latency but also the midi latency which in your particular case adds on is at least 3ms less then any FW or USB - to achieve it use RME midi in for your keyboard

sweet. just to clarify when I said 8ms i didnt mean i get pops at 8ms.
but that is the setting i am using right now, becazsue tahth way i get 256 samples.

is that important getting 256 samples, when recording midi?

I mean if i have to get less samples but les latency, i can always change it back to 256k for mixdown right?

does that make sense?

there is an issue with midi recording in Live.

All things being equal, Live should record midi at the point you press the controller. At the moment it places the midi note when the sound was heard not when the key was pressed.

look up 'midi delay recording' in the bugs forum.

this is mostly noticed by people playing keyboard and percussion without quantisation.

this is something that it looks like it has improved in 7.
