A BIG question to all of you UK people!! (immigration n00b)

but i'd really appreciate it if anyone could shed a light on immigrant living in the UK.

I've always quite fancied Brighton - only an hour from London (well...traffic permitting) and loads going on music wise - not as big as London but not really cheap

I guess if you're going it alone though London will be at least your starting point - makes sense to start there and then you can get a feel for where you'd like to go

My mum tells me they have been swamped by eastern europeans since the EU opened up more - Polish, Bulgarians etc and the Polish are buying up loads of property and stealing all the jobs and women (lol j/k although apparently it has had a knock on effect on the wages - in particular for the kind of jobs a non English speaking immigrant is likely to get forst off at least)

I left the UK in 2005 and have been back twice and it seemed to be getting busier and busier

maybe it's just because I live in a nice laid back place now - in fact why dont you come to Oz? I thought Russian visitors to England got fed Polonium? (ouch, sorry...)

but from what i know, the UK is the most loyal country immigration-wise, ie more chances to enter, to stay and to be legalised as a resident

besides, english is the only language i know more or less

Brighton is well nice for a party, I spent most of the summer of 2005 there.

of course it's not quite as bad as forge is describing, but you might also want to bear in mind that londoners can generally be quite indifferent towards immigrants. to many you'll be just another russian guy. but in the smaller cities and towns you're more likely to meet people who are genuinely curious to meet you, and your nationality can really work to your advantage in the music world.

i remember when putting on parties in cheltenham, people were always interested to see dj's i'd invited over from other countries.

A guy who worked with us over the summer here lives there. He said the public services (rubbish collection, etc) are crap and virtually nonexistant.

I would say dont come to my home town, or our neighbour (and in some circumstances our rivals/enemy ) Portsmouth. Lots of random violence and general shitty behaviour from thugs, roads are a mess, etc.

Theres a MASSIVE immigrant and eastern european worker population here. Sometimes it causes the city a fair few problems (drunk drivers, people driving cars unfit for the roads - anyone moving to a new country needs to brush up on the local laws, etc, some of these guys dont) but by and large most of the lads and lasses are dead cool.

One of my recent workmates (he worked for us in NHS catering for years) was from China and doing a masters degree. He said it helped to find out as much as possible about his course, the city, housing etc before applying to come here. Oh and be honest with the immigration people - you dont want to cause yourself any problems or risk rejection because you've filled in the wrong forms.

I think Hainan has t leave when he finishes his degree. Part of the rules of his visa as he's not from the Eu, I could be wrong on that though obviously.

cold in Uk has nothing to do with cold in Moscow... i actually find it much easier to tolerate here. in winter buildings are well heated and it ait that damp as in the uk...

I'm born and bred in London, but went to university in Bristol. i have to say if it wasn't for work and family commitments i would probably move back down there. Great little music scene and accomodation is reasonable(not much but enough). London is a great place but really expensive, I cant even park in my own street without paying for it. That said my job pays me a lot more in London than if i was in another part of the country. My advice, live somewhere else and just come to London for a night out. Good luck
