Midi & UC33e question

Post by B » Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:05 am

Hello All,

I can only seem to get one midi device working at a time and I'm wondering whether I need a midi merge box.

Does anyone with a UC33e know if it is possible to play more than one midi device (in this case a keyboard) via the UC33e's Midi IN to trigger samples in Ableton or play notes in Cubase in a standard midi chain?

Looking at the Evolution manual it mentions that you have to use a midi merge box but I can't understand why the evolution would have a Midi OUT and an IN - this is usually a standard feature on midi gear and is usually no problem.

As always any help appreciated.

its a buzz-kill, but the uc-33e's midi in is just for sending messages to it---it definitely is not a midi thru--nothing that comes into the uc33 via the midi in will ever be sent back out. It does suck, and seem kind of silly for them to have even bothered with an "in" when it can't go through. I find myself in the same boat as you--really wanting the uc33e to be a part of a midi chain, but the only place it can be is at the start of a midi chain, or by itself on usb. oh well.

I'm a big believer in the Anatek Pocket Merge. My live setup has two of 'em. They're bus powered by the MIDI cable and do one thing well. Merge two MIDI streams into one. It feels cleaner and safer to me serving up a pre-merged MIDI stream to the computer rather that mess around with multiple interfaces etc.

Anatek went out of business in 98 or so, so you'll only find 'em second hand (prolly 20-40$ US) Midiman used to make one as well.

Thanks for the help. I think i'll risk it over usb until I get a merge box. does anyone have any experience of the UC33e over USB? does it respond as it should do? I'll be using it live so any advice on it would be good.

Cheers
