Undo

Working on some tight scheduled project these last couple of days, due to a freak accident I realized there's a flaw in the way Live handles Undos.

At some point working on the project, I was going to freeze a track. Opened the menu to do so when I realized I had to do some editing first. Moved the mouse down to close the menu, but accidentally hit something in there, and being a compulsive saver, I hit Cmd + S immediately after.

Right after saving, I realized I had deleted the track, and that undo couldn't get it back because Live stops undoing the moment you Save. This forced me to redo that particular track from scratch.

So, my request is for an undo list that doesn't clear when you save. I think it's ok if it's not endless or visible in a separate window like DP, but at least being able to go back 10 steps anytime without worrying if you saved after you did what you want to undo would be very helpful.

I propose a simpler solution, which would be as effective imho. Live should offer an option to save snapshots of the project. Say for example, you check a little checkbox in preferences, and then when you save your projects live would automatically keep a copy (backup) every save.

For example say my project is called "my_song.als". Every time I'd hit save, Live could save a copy with an incremental number, "my_song_1.als", "my_song_2.als" etc. Maybe rotate back to 1 after 3 or so to avoid creating a whole bunch of files in there. But basically just to prevent those accidental saves (I did them myself) and to allow to rollback to a previous version easily.

I'll also add I really love the fact that Live keeps a copy of my project in case of crash. It happened a few times and saved my life.

As much as I agree with you that Live should keep the undo list when you save, here's a method to get around the problem:
I have a 'song history' folder in my project, and whenever I would usually save, I do 'save a copy as...' into that folder instead. This way at least as long as I have the project open the undo list keeps growing. Not ideal, but still a little bit better than losing the undo list with every save.

I would understand, if the undo list was wiped when you close a project (in Logic e.g. you can have that as a preference), but losing it when you save doesn't really make much sense.

was going to put in a new thread, but:

why does the undo history get cleared when i save? - why not save the undo history with the live set, so you could undo back into your last editing session (or further) if you wanted to..
this would be especially useful were it possible to navigate separate undo chains for different tracks, or even different plugins on a track.

I do something similar to what dr.wackler said

I use revisions - the first set for a track is usually Name1-01

then every time I am about to do something fairly significant I save the next revison

then if I make a change that is quite major - like a tempo change, then I move up to the next increment of 10 - so: Name1-10

then if I do anything really major like change from 4/4 to breakbeat I change the main number: Name2-01

Yeah this is a genereal problem, also in other programms. They obviously think, we knew waht we are doing

Accidental saving is bad. so i also want this no matter how...
Saving different sets as snapshots is a good idea, but not very good for accidents, I think...

I did this the other night as well, was pretty annoying. But, like a previous person has said, I save a new copy of the file every once in awhile when I feel like I might like to go back. Also just in incase something happened to my file and it got corrupt or lost.
