Easily: if I'm for example recording a guitar while monitoring it against the rest of the project, it might strike me that I'd like to hear slightly different channel levels, or perhaps mute some tracks on the fly in order to concentrate on a specific background part, or anything like that. With this kind of a toggling feature, I could just keep recording and improvising, adjusting all that stuff on the fly without Live interpreting it as automation events.

Come to think of it, I might even default to keeping that toggle in the "don't record automation" position and enable it only when I
know I'm going to record a take involving automation.
