Best Controller for triggering Clips?

Post by williamm » Sun Oct 14, 2007 11:56 pm

Can someone recommend the best controller for triggering clips in Live? By best, I really mean which one will allow me to trigger an obscene amount of clips. It looks like the PadKontrol is kinda what I'm looking for, but I wanted to see if there is a better option out there.

the PK is "nearly" one of the best triggers. At the moment, it cannot be configured easily to give visual feedback for which clips are currently playing.

the best is probably one of the monome flavours.

The BCR2000 isnt bad either, if you dont mind twisting knobs to launch a clip.

beautiful! love the wooden case.

but expensive for what it does. do you get more than one bank of 36 buttons? i mean can you switch scenes like on a PK?

sure it can, a simple midi channel out of live into the padkontrol will make the pads blink totally easy.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

The ohm hasn't been released yet but several of us on this board have already pre-ordered one so we will have to get back to you on the details. But other than the monomes this thing has the most buttons for launching clips that I've seen. The price does seem a little steep but the monomes are even more expensive once you jump above the 40h level, not sure if they are even going to make any more 40hs.

The monomes are probably more programmable than the ohm but they also don't come with faders and knobs. Also the ohm comes with VJ software.

this is a dumb question, but how many different scenes could i really trigger via the padkontrol? not knowing which one has been triggered last or is in play isn't too important to me, it seems easy enough to lay everything out to the point where i'd know what is playing.

a compact solution, maybe best for maximum scenes:

a big ol' midi piano keyboard. or a small one using the octave up/down button.

i have this working, but its definately not "easy". having 20 odd tracks just for midi routing that cant be hidden in the session view is a workaround at best. and if you want each pad to light individually, each pad will need its own midi routing track. (unless this routing can be done through racks, but ive not worked out how yet)

thats 16 tracks per PK scene for 16 triggerable clips.

id say the monome kicks its ass all over the floor in that regard. no extra programming required for simple visual feedback.

The PK has 16 scenes that can be selected by pressing two buttons. really easy to change between them. At the moment i have scene 1 setup for Mackie Emulation navigation, scene 2 for FX (also using the trackpad for changing parameters), scene 3 for 2 x Impulse drums, and scene 4-8 for triggering clips with light feedback.

without the feedback though its really difficult to work out where you have been if youre into a freeflowing jam.

www.jazzmutant.com - the Lemur is THE trigger system.

Make 100 *labelled* buttons on one screen, colour-coded and ready to go, some with Radio Button functionality, move on to the next page for 100 more.

I love it and would never use another controller for Live, I think. Sold some cool kit to get mine and I don't regret it for a second.
