there might be another round of 40h monomes (the 8x8). monome is 1 person working full time, another part time. IMO there's a better than 50/50 chance they'll make more 40h boxes, probably, maybe in the Spring, after the 128 and 256 work is done and after the holidays.
I'll sell you mine for $3,000.

There will be no more 40h ever. There were a few special builds and a DIY kit for the 40h but alas they are no more. I have a buddy who is selling his if anyone is really interested. His GF bought it for him after seeing mine but he never used it. seriously, NEVER used. Anyhow, the 256 is a monster both in quality and price. I love my 40h & wouldn't part with it.

you would regret that most certainly. the support and user base on the 40h and other monome objects far exceeds anything that the tenori can touch. the the open source software being put out, the 40h is an extension of your creativity with no limits, unlike the tanori which certanly has a few. cheers!
what's your source on that? I haven't read from tehn anything about not making more units, just that he's SUPER busy and happy with the 128/256 release and he'll think about the 40h later, maybe.Oramas wrote:There will be no more 40h ever.
both the schematic and software for the Atmega chip are open source and published on the monome.org site. anyone at any time can make their own 40, it will cost more than the monome.org prices and take much longer to build.
40h devices will be available forever.
IMO
Tenori-on is for the user who wants to buy something and play it out of the box. you're limited to the built in apps and sounds, it's not open source. I always put a lot of faith in people to hack things, but it remains to be seen. it looks pretty, makes interesting sounds and it's fun, no doubt.
monomes are completely up to the user. there's a handful of apps made by users, more will be released over time. there are no built in sounds and on its own it does nothing, it needs (a free) environment to run, max runtime, Pd, Chuck, anything that works with OSC or midi.
both are pretty cool devices, it's a coincidence that they came out around the same time. (the 40h was inspired by the 'matrixctrl' object in max.)

yes, but the cool alu 40h without walnut won't come back, I think.... shame, I liked the minimalism of it. I am also kind of bummed out that the 256 isn't going to be that way (slim, alu and black plastic) - the 256 could have been something you'd pick up while performing, but it's not handy enough anymore, I think.Tone Deft wrote:oh, there's going to be a second run of 40h kits in November.

with a 40h kit the case is what you make it, literally, DIY.
