Powerbook to macbook switch...

Post by aen » Tue Oct 16, 2007 2:51 pm

Im moving up in the world to a macbook. Im currently runnning live 5, and just wondering if any issues are going to pop up when i try to install on the new computer...

I've heard that some mac programs made for older versions of OSX have trouble on the new pentium based machines.

You will. I just upgraded from Live 2 on my old G4 Powermac to Live 6 when I bought my macbook.

I did attempt to run Live 2 on the macbook but the cpu was at 80- 90%! It was running through Rosetta just barely.

Pay for the upgrade when you can. It's really great.

Also, if you used the internal sound card of Powerbook for audio purposes, you'll realize, that the one in Macbook sucks big time (at least when it comes to latency).

Ok, I don't own a Macbook, only Macbook Pro, but I'm guessing it's at least not better in Macbook.

Well, an audio interface is needed anyway for recording and proper quality, so..

Live 5.2.2 runs fine on a Macbook.
I use it all the time.

However, being single-core capable only, its not as efficient at using both procs.
Live 6 runs better, since it uses both cores, but you don't HAVE to upgrade.

Personally, I'm upgrading to 6 now while I can get the upgrade to 7 free (or boxed for $40), but don't think you can't work with Live 5.2.2 on a Macbook, because you can.

The built-in soundcard really isn't all that good. It "works" on a basic level, but to be effective, a replacement is in order, assuming you don't already have something.

Take care,

ahaha. jUst noticed I can upgrade to 5.2 for FREEEE.

I'm running a tascam us-122, so the built in sound isnt much of an issue.

several things
wait for leopard on the 26th before u get a MAcbook mind u I here that if u buy a new Mac after 1st October Leopard will only cost you the price of a disk (5 or 6 dollars from memory)
Migration assistant sucks badly if you are going from PPC to INtel based system. I suggest you dont use it . I did and my macbookpro ran really slow till i wiped it and installed fresh. sure you can easily backup your mail and all that stuff and manually pop it across.. Just be careful.
Live 6 as stated above is dual core enabled so it literally doubles the power of live on a project.

I use superduper and back my system up to an external firewire drive.
of course if you are keeping you powerbook you can put it in firewire mode and access the drive and manually copy stuff u need across later

basically a fresh install is definiely the way to go.
MacbookPro Core2Duo 17" 160 gb SATA 2gb ram.
Korg M3
1 Terabyte External Drive
Presonus Firebox
