Stompboxes lead me to Techno Production

Post by suburbanbather » Wed Jul 21, 2004 4:04 am

I went way off topic in another thread. Well anyways anybody here into stompboxes? The thing that flipped the switch in my head to make music was when I a Metallica video, the one that comes in that live shit box set. When Jason Newsted did his bass solo with his korg g5 I think? I was amazed that he was making that noise with his bass. So I decided to learn how to play bass. Then the fun began once I got into efx pedals. I built up a collection that consisted of a Zoom Bass multi efx, Electro Harmonix big muff (the big green one that looks like a tank),Electro Harmonix Bass micro synth, Dunlop bass wah wah, DoD Grind, DoD gonkulator,DoD meatbox, Prescription Electronics Depth Charge, Moogerfooger lowpass filter, Moogerfooger 12stage phaser, 4ms (they were 3ms at the time) triwave, 4ms noise swash. www.4ms.com I had more fun hooking all of them up and making NOISE than I did than actually playing my bass. What was really cool was to use in this order moogerfooger lowpass>moogerfooger phaser>electroharmonix microsynth. The moogerfoogers can self oscillate(spelling?) you send that into the micro synth and Wwwwwweeeeee. Running drum loops through the micro synth is fun add a delay after that and space out. I sold everything eventually with the exception of the DoD stuff and the 4ms pedals. I also used to have a BC Rich Warlock Bass, Rickenbacker(spelling? again) bass, Hartke kick back 15inch amp, Vintage Ampeg VST Bass head from 1970 something, 400watts of all tube power and it weighed 80 pounds no joke! and an Ampeg 4x10 cab. I sold all of that stuff  and bought a Zoom Sampletrack, Mackie 1202 Vlz pro mixer, DBX compressor/limiter/gate (don't remember the model) then sold the sample track and DBX and bought Acid Pro3, Reaktor3, M-Audio delta 44, Midiman keystation 61, Event Ps8 monitors. Got a 1500-2000 $ loan and had my local mom and pop computer store build me a PIII 1ghz 512mb ram 30gb hdd 60gb secondary hdd plextor 16x Cdrw burner. So here I am now with my PIII desktop and just recently got a dell inspiron 8600 Pentium M 2.0ghz 1gb ram 60gb 7200 rpm hdd Echo Indigo DJ and its running Live, Reaktor4, and Absynth2 will be at my doorstep this week along with a Uc33e controller and I might get T-Racks later. I don't think I'll need anything after that for a very long time. All of this little by little over an 8-9 year span. Funny how Jason Newsted's bass solos and Cliff Burton also but he really only used distortion and a wah wah, inspired me to get into playing bass and now I'm producing techno. So whats your story?

waldorf!

You ever been to Atomic Music in College Park? It might as well be Mecca!

It's funny - I got into this stuff through funky FX pedals too. Too bad I've sold most of em to pay for other gear. (Still have the Boss DF-2 though! First thing I ever bought at Atomic...years ago).
