Ableton 6 better on OSX or Windows?
Is Ableton 6 more stable on OSX 10.4 or Windows XP? And does anyone know which will be better for version 7?

Don't believe this, he might be joking.timothyallan wrote:It's much better on XP if you are concerned with track count and the warmth of audio.
I often play with a friend who uses xp and his ableton sounds colder than mine (I am on Apple OSX 10.4.10). But this might be related to his workflow and the plug-ins he uses. Also the temperature of sound is depending a lot on subjective factors like ear-bleeding, blood-pressure etc.
Also I find that my OSX is more stable than his Windows. The Abletons are both equally stable. My friend is less stable than me. But this also depends on the day, on what each of us had for dinner, etc.
If you run ableton on a macbook it will run slightly faster using windows instead of OSX. But this is processor-speed (doesn't affect the bpm!), don't know about stability though.

I switched to OSX and have found ableton to crash less often. It still crashes, but significantly less often.adambomb337 wrote:Is Ableton 6 more stable on OSX 10.4 or Windows XP? And does anyone know which will be better for version 7?
The other issue for me is being able to connect midi controllers whilst ableton is running without having to restart ableton for them to be useable.

A better question would be does it run better on an Apple, Toshiba, Sony, HP, Fujitsu, Alienware or whatever, not to mention all the different models. stability of XP depends a lot on the hardware platform.
Not saying that I know the answer though!
It runs very reliably on my Sony but used to crash and glitch all the time on my old Fujitsu machine.
On the other hand Apple is a good choice because there are only a few different configurations and they are all known to work well. Whereas Sony have about 20 different models and they keep changing all the time.
Having said that any reputable brand should be good enough.

in my experience live is extremely stable on both platforms. i think i had about 2 crashes on my intel mac in the last 6 months.
on my old windows pc it would crash occasionally - probably due to rouge plug-ins. but in either case it doesn't really matter as live automatically prompts you if you want to restore your set from the undo history.

We've discussed this before, while XP shows a lower CPU useage, Live on XP also starts to drop outp at displayed lower percentages compared to OSX. So really, it's still about equal.

We have a macbook and a pc both running live 6
From our experince abelton 6 does far better on XP.
It is just all around better performance.
Hopefully abe 7 address some of the issues that 6 had with OSX
