Ableton - Motu Traveler - hardware reverb and delay units

Post by runeif » Sat Oct 20, 2007 10:10 pm

Hi !

I want to use my hardware reverb and delay-units together with Motu Traveler and Ableton Live 6. What options do I have - regarding how to best hook up this units for studio work? It would be nice to use reverb and delay the same way as with live mixer. Or maybe too rute signal to tracks with the effects - but how? Any tips?

What you can do is connect the external device to both an input and output pair. Then from live route the needed track or a send to the external out going to the device, and monitor the device's output in another audio track for recording or with Cue Mix.

If you want to use it as an insert in a track somewhere between your plug ins, you'll have to split your plug ins into 2 audio tracks. For example, you want to use Live's compressor, then an external distortion, then Live's Grain Delay. You need to put in the original track the Compressor, route it out to the external out going to the Distortion, then on the second track set the input to the one where the Distortion comes back, set the track's monitoring to IN, then put the Grain Delay in that track.

You should check the Lexicon MX series. There are 4 models: MX200, 300, 400, 500. The first three have a USB connection that enables you to control the device by a VST plugin. As far as I know it is even possible to automate the units parameters in the host program. The audio does not go through USB but througn analog or digital connections. The 500 is another story. It transfers 4 channels of audio I/O as well as the control signals thru Firewire. The 400 and 500 are both surround sound units.

I believe the TC Electronic M350 is also controlled by a VST plugin but it uses MIDI to exchange control signals with the computer.

I haven't used any of these units so I cannot comment on the quality. But even the MPX100, Lexicon's budget unit from 2002 sounded better than many reverb plugins.

Ooooppsssss!!! I'm so sorry man. I don't know why I totally misread your post!! I thought that you were looking for a hardware unit to use with Live. My apologies for the pointless post! :-)

I happen to be looking for an hardware reverb to use with Live and MOTU Traveler. I guess that affected my perception.
