4 devices on USB hub vs 1 device on 4 ports

Post by peeddrroo » Mon Oct 22, 2007 10:28 am

i was wondering: is there a performance difference in using a USB hub with 4 devices connected to it, vs pluging each device to its own port?

except for an external drive, the devices are not really bandwidth hungry (mainly mouse/midi controlers)

for mouse and midicontrollers, dongles and cardreaders it will work fine. (well, depence a bit upon the hub, i use the one from adaptech). As you mentioned, i also connect my usb-drives directly, well, in some cases it is silly, like a drive, which only keep my backups...
And, not every cable is fine, some of them are realy crab, so take care of the cables as well....
bye,
stefan

are for example 4 usb ports on your laptop always 4 real (full bandwidth) ports or might it be an internal hub split into 4 ports ? and how can you check it ? in the system properties ?
