Are you using Live in Boot Camp on an MBP? (Latency...)

Post by robbmasters » Tue Oct 02, 2007 12:42 am

I am. On a MacBook Pro 15.4" 2.16GHz C2D with 2GB RAM.

But no matter what I do I can't seem to get sensible latency...

I originally had a Yamaha 01X, which gave me around 40ms latency (I think).

Then I bought an Ultralite. Best I could get with that was 384 samples (around 20ms).

I've now got an Audiofire 2. Using Live's audio buffer lesson, I still get glitches at 512 samples (40.6ms)!

I get better results with ASIO4ALL, but every time I start my PC it's different! I have to play around with Live's preferences and the ASIO4ALL console until I get something sensible - 128 samples if I'm lucky.

(In OS X Live recommends 284 samples - giving a total latency of 18.96 ms)

I've made most of the optimisations recommended at http://www.musicxp.net, I think I've downloaded all the necessary (FireWire) hotfixes, and I've disabled wireless networking, FireWire networking, and Bluetooth. But I wondered if anyone had any other ideas?

What latency are you getting in Boot Camp (and with what MBP and what audio interface)?

Thanks,

Robb

what???

I didn't know MBP's gave such crap latencies in Windows XP...

I'm running a winxp laptop with the 200 less expensive presonus firebox and i can get 4ms latency!

gheez

Hmm... My mate's colleagues recommended the Presonus Firebox. Maybe now I can see why. But I wanted something bus powered...

So can somebody tell me, on a macbook, osx, best latency with motu ultralite, or with the presonus firebox?

I can run my Ultralite down to about 4ms on OSX with my MBP 2.16 c2d 2GB, though I normally leave it at 256 samples and never have any issues. No idea about via bootcamp though.

the audio drivers in bootcamp are teh suck.

if you can, get a good fire wire interface that you can use as a master soundcard, and that should drop your latency.

Er, I have been using FireWire interfaces. But latency still sucks...

As far as I understood Bootcamp is just a boot-manager that allows you to boot a different OS. So all driver and hardware-related stuff is handled by Windows after booting anyway. If you've got performance issues they may be due to chipset drivers. Santa-Rosa-Chipset 965 should be used in MBP so maybe try downloading a new set from Intel directly instead of relying on the Bootcamp CD. You may also want to look for current firewire drivers.

Well, my MBP is the previous generation (C2D) but the principle still holds. So yeah, good idea, I'll see if I can find any better FireWire drivers.

Edit: doesn't look like there are any...

OK, it looks like my problems were caused by my USB card reader. Once I disable that I can get 3ms with ASIO4ALL (albeit not with Echo's own drivers). So I'm pretty happy now. :D

I don't know why this should be. The Firewire controller does share an IRQ with a USB controller, but not the USB controller to which the card reader is connected.

Ah well, I don't really care why it works as long as it does. 8) I just use DevCon to disable (and a few other things) it when I start Live.

3ms!! That's friggin awesome... I'm using a laptop with 3 little chip readers (compact flash, SD, and some other one).. Do you think if I shut those off I could get that? Right now I'm seeing 12.5 ms using the Ozonic as my audio interface.
