Controlling Sampler with MIDI CC's

Post by guyinco6nito » Tue Oct 23, 2007 6:57 pm

Hi!

I'm using the Ableton 6 Sampler to play with vocal samples live. I just found out an extraordinarily cool way to control these samples and I am wondering if anyone might know another way to achieve this.

My MIDI Keyboard (a Korg microKontrol) has a Joystick that controls the Pitch Bend (on the X-axis) and Aftertouch (which Sampler considers Chan. Pres.) (on the Y-axis)

In the MIDI tab of Sampler, I have bound Chan Pres. to control the Sample Offset. This means that with the Joystick in the middle (it's natural resting place) I can play the middle part of the vocal sample, with the joystick all the way down I hear the beginning, and with it all the way up I can hear the end of the sample as I strike different keys. This is great for me because I can isolate words and sounds on the fly (which is super fun!!!)

My Problem: The Joystick always snaps back to it's center resting position.
What I'd like to do: Control Sample Offset with one of my faders on a MIDI CC channel, so I can leave the sample offset at a particular sound.

Is this possible?
Could I use a Macro (or MIDI-OX) to transform a CC into a Chan Pres.?
Can I bind the Sample Offset any other way?
Should I post this on a feature wishlist? :-)

Thanks much for any information you can provide, and go Live!

If you have an editor (i don't have the korg it but I'm sure there's one) with your microkontrol, I think you'll just have to assign midi channel pressure control number (131) to a fader.
My tongue spits english like a frog and my head is currently searching for a comprehensive language.
And I shit here

Problem Hacked!

Hi again,

Thanks for the advice, but sadly Korg's current iteration of firmware and editor librarian software for the microKontrol does not allow me to set the faders or rotary encoders to any MIDI CC #<0 or >127, so mapping a fader to control the Chan. Pres (Aftertouch, CC131)) isn't designed to be easy.

I ended up installing MIDI-OX and MIDI-YOKE and set up a custom datamap outputting to the virtual MIDI device MD Yoke 1 (necessary since the software cannot hijack the input ports of any hardware) that takes my first two faders, and replaces them with Aftertouch (Chan. Pres.) and Mod Wheel (Mod Wheel) messages. In Ableton, I turned on the MIDI Input from MD Yoke 1, and was getting the modified messages. In Sampler, I have Aftertouch and Mod Wheel (at this point I feel bad for fooling Ableton... but we'll be Ok) controlling the Loop Start time and the Loop Lengh, giving me fader control over where the sample starts, and how long it plays before looping itself. I've just played with it, and it is an extraordinarily fun way to play Live. I highly recommend it.

Hope this information was useful!
