strange high cpu increase after clean-install windows lappie

hope there is anyone that can help me.
i have the following problem.
I have a 2,26 pentium M laptop with a gig of Ram that normally with a clean and uncluttered system would run the live 5 performancetest around a nice 26%
I always test with the performancetest to see how cluttered my system is; and sometimes it would go up to 35 if the computer was loaded with strange plugins of all sorts, shapes and sizes.
now i bought a desktop, and thought I'd do a nice clean install with windows, to have a good gig-ready laptop running only ableton and just one or 2 plugins.

all said and done, now when i have installed ableton and done all the XP tweaks I always do; it gives a huge 55% on the performance test. !!!
i ve checked all the hardware; IDE channels, memory, processor.
system just tells me its all running fine.
all the power background tweaks are done correctly.
I tried installing different versions of windows; no difference.
I did clean installs before, and none such problems happened before.

anyone knows what the deal is or has an idea?

any thought through help would be evry much appreciated.

is your RAM seated? IOW does the system see it?

yeah this is all fine; with memory i ment ram

there is really nothing strange then except it looks like i lost half of my cpu strength when i do the live 5 test in ableton

i checked with a good nerdy friend just a while a go on msn; and he asked me the logical questions too.
all looking like its doin fine; no strange things when you look at memory; ide channels; processor and soforth..

what are the specs of your desktop and audio interface?

if its a name brand desktop, they often come loaded with all sorts of memory eating crap. Multimedia applets, support applets, Mcaffees or Nortons antivirus, each with a billion components, Roxio multimedia crapplets.

Uninstall all of this, or better yet do a fresh OS install, install antivirus with a small footprint (avast works for me), and then do your tweaks.

The problem could also be with the drivers for your interface.

no guys; I really mean a lot of steps beyond that
I do this allready for some 8-9 years so I know the obvious things to do; really well
not driverinterface problem; not excessive other shit on the computer problem
that all is not it.
I am looking for a more stranger occurance that might have happened;
like maybe someone had this as well; and found out he had to pout in a new harddrive or something..
