Problem w/ Novation SL automap setup

Hey folks, glad for this forum...!! I've had Live for a couple of years, but am only now digging into the bones more. I just got a Novation Zero SL and have done the setup as suggested by Novation's Startup stuff and Live's Help screens. Have also read quite a few articles in this forum for clues and have learned a bunch but haven't found the answer on this one....

The right side of the SL is working, the mixer controls work as expected. However, the left side of the SL shows "please select a device in Live to edit it" and none of the controls appear to do anything, including the row select keys and the scroll keys. I select tracks in Live and double click on what I THINK are what SL thinks is a device, but the message won't go away and I haven't cracked it yet.

Could be ports and channel issues, but I'm pretty sure i'm hooked them up per the directions in the various docs. Any help or directions to other more comprehensive setup documentation would be much appreciated!!

hey y'all, just writing with my tail b/w my legs for the noob questions before. i'm just going to keep hacking! I'm getting more familiar with the various templates, reading old threads for clues, and getting a feel for things....
