noob Q. - is ableton more than I need?
noob Q. - is ableton more than I need?
very much a newbie at the home studio thing, although I do play out in a band, and we are looking to get more creative on stage.
the salesman at the local music store has been pushing Live, and from everything I've read it's a great tool - esp. for DJs it seems.
Any thoughts on whether Live is more than I really need? I will be doing home studio work, but not at a very high technical level since I'm new at much of this. On the other hand, I've read on these forums that the LE versions are not too useful.
thanks.

Ableton IS a great tool, and IMO its more for the performing musician than it is for the DJ (they usually resort to Serato or Torq or whatnot)
Live will do you just fine. In fact, you don't need a very high technical understanding to get up and running with live at all. I just recieved Logic today and I am utterly bewildered at all of the options compared to humble ol' Ableton's workflow
The LE version will do you just fine if you intend to use Ableton as a tool on stage, but if you're thinking about using it for home studio work, I'd recommend the full version.

No live is everything you need, adn when you start learning what you are doing you will use damn near all of it. Run with it!tyronus wrote:very much a newbie at the home studio thing, although I do play out in a band, and we are looking to get more creative on stage.

Computer games don't effect kids... If Pacman affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music

I had the same question the first time I encountered Live, which was version 2 I think. Back then all I've ever used was Cakewalk stuff which was little more than a software rendition of a 24-track recorder. I got Live LE free with a sound card, and although I was intrigued by the uber-cool interface, I couldn't really understand how it would be useful to me, a more traditional guitar-bass-drums-vocals kind of musician. But soon I discovered the awesome, totally unlimited potential of the clip view and was hooked for life. YES it is more than you need if you are going to ride the ghost ship of traditional recording for the rest of your career. NO it is not more than you need if you have any inkling that you might one day take the plunge into the 21st century and see how far you can take it.
I think the breakthrough moment for me in crossing over from traditional DAWs to Live was when I figured out you could lay down each part of your song as a clip and rearrange to heart's content without re-recording anything. Adding and subtracting accompaniment on the fly was another huge breakthrough, and of course being able to raise or lower tempo after the fact.
So all that is to say you won't be sorry if you get Live (Lite is probably fine to start with and you can always upgrade later) even if you don't understand how it will be useful right now.

you used the keyword. salesman. the salesman & ableton will take your money, but you will run into bugs & performance problems and ableton won't have that at the top of their priorities. They spend your money coding the next product they will charge you for. You will find a bug in version X, and it will take them fucking ages to fix it because they are spending your money on coding product Y - which they will also charge you for. if that's ok with you, go ahead and throw your money at them but dont say no one warned you. if you are going to use ableton, and the session view is great, I advise finding a way of obtaining it without paying for it. they don't respect you as a customer, they just want your money. And they have guys hired to chat in the forum here who are all polite & mannerly.....but talk is CHEAP, text is even CHEAPER. if you expect to receive the product as described, or if you like value for money.....dont get involved with ableton, financially. it will piss you off. ESPECIALLY since you're a simple user. ironically, its the fundamental basics of live that they arse up and neglect to sort out.tyronus wrote:very much a newbie at the home studio thing, although I do play out in a band, and we are looking to get more creative on stage.

You know what idiot b0unce, now you are just being pathetic. There are PLENTY of people that are using Live just fine, heck, some of them are even releasing albums from their work in Live. Just because you have some bug up your ass over some stupid little thing that doesn't seem to be bothering anyone else as bad, doesn't mean you have to keep spewing the same rhetoric over and over and over again.b0unce wrote:you used the keyword. salesman. the salesman & ableton will take your money, but you will run into bugs & performance problems and ableton won't have that at the top of their priorities. You obviously can't produce ANYTHING worthwhile regardless of the tools you are using and you are using Ableton as an excuse for your own shortcomings. Enough already, we get it, now move on and use something else you pathetic worm...
... or in other words, stop your whining you little bitch and GET A LIFE!

you see how emotional these fanatics are, tyronus ? ...you're buying into a cult man. reasion & rationale, basic concepts like receiving a product as described don't exist here. bend over and grin, lets see those pearly whites. yay we're all buddies in abletonia, woo hoo i like you do you like me ?info_warfare wrote:You know what idiot b0unce, now you are just being pathetic. Yeah. I work for an Ableton distributer. It's a job. Unfortunately I'm not the kind of person that can live in New York and not have a job. I like my job for the most part.
What I really do is love music. Play music. Write music. See music. Hear music. Part of my job is to mess around with all of the audio crap around. Live is simply my favorite thing out of all of those things. I don't like it as much as my guitars, but for software it's my fave.
