Analogue, virtual analogue, expander or with keyboard?

it's kind of a broad question. but for 700 you could certainly get something great. I managed to get the Roland JV-1010 for $100 and I got the old Yamaha Tx81z for $50. but I'm uber-cheap when it comes to hardware...but you can get some great stuff for not a lot of money.

Thanks drush, its my fav SpeedyJ track.

I guess Im looking for something to be somewhat portable for doing live stuff. Like a desktop synth or something. Pretty much for Hard techno to.

monster track that it is.

anyway:
older version Virus, A or B.
for deep options, Nord Modular. dunno if you can find them used <$700 but these days i wouldn't be surprised.
also a Waldorf MicroQ would probably make you very happy.

slightly less desireable (imo) but still very capable and likely more in the $400 range would be a korg ms2000 or roland jp8080.

I'm the happy owner of a Novation K-Station which is quite portable. 2 octave keyboard and plenty of knobs to tweak. It sounds pretty good too! There's also the MicroKORG (it runs on batteries) but I never played with one.

If you want to make some wild sounds get a DSI Evolver. Under $500 USD. Sounds awesome and really flexible.

I'd like to second that - An Evolver and some valvey effect, maybe?
(how about a used SidStation, perhaps? Are there any on the market at that price?)
Or you could buy analogue, and not worry about midi implementation? All you need is one steady hand for playing the keys and one twitchy hand for the knobs, and ONE good take  Can't you get Korg ms20's for about 700$?

-but the evolver fits in the backpack, the ms20 doesn't...

Roland MC202 , a midi to cv converter, and some stomp boxes.

on its own, its a great monophonic synth, but add some fx to it and it turns into a BEAST! and they dont get much more portable.

The Yamaha TG-33 is a good FM portable synth. i beleive mills used it to death.

or a MicroModular and a UC33. that would certainly have the most power.

I personally both love the MS2000 and the Waldorf Q. Both has got pretty broad range of sounds. If you want a raw analogue synth take a look at the Studio Electronics ATC-1.

i recently bought an Alesis Ion for around that price. Although i'm v happy with it im sure there are better bits of kit for that price. Iv'e got a few bits of classic gear (pre 1990) which i like a lot better.

There are a few replies that i agree with above, if i were you i would look out for any of the following

jupiter 4,6 or 8
jp 8080 or 8000 (either - looks pants, sounds quality)
novation nova (better than supernova in my opinion)
novation k-station
sidstation (i like alot, sounds gnarly but prob hard to get hold of)

since u like speedyj you might prefer a monophonic beast:

roland sh101 or sh09 (i got one o' these, real phatt)
korg ms-20 (classic BEAST!!)
