probably guru - fxpansion has a demo - check it out. It has a fun step sequencer, comes with gigs of sounds, and is very flexible.

When I used logic, I loved ultrabeat, but this is an ableton forum so you probably don't use logic (I don't either anymore).

I love stylus rmx, but that is more loop based.

Guru looks good. Are there any others within the same capabilities, besides Battery, etc?

Yeah was looking at that earlier today, the demo's sound great.

I'm looking for something to work well with my padKontrol.

well, for $50 (US) less than GURU you can get Logic Express which includes Ultrabeat and tons of other goodies. That being said, GURU does the sample slicing thing really well and is set up more like an MPC-style box which might work well with the padkontrol. Then again, I don't know if you are looking for a sampling beatbox or a drum machine. GURU does sampling, Ultrabeat does synthesis and sampling (but if you really want sampling GURU is muh more capable than ultrabeat) . Both have good step-sequencers. And there is always microtonic:

I have RMX, Guru and Ultrabeat and have used them all extensively at one point or another.

For all of apple's programming genius I don't find Ultrabeat very intuitive and it's limited to Logic so not any use in Live (unless you are preparing content and dropping it in the whole time).

I've really gotten out of using RMX, I do fire it up for writing for video as it has great atmospheric rhythms that can keep a track going with out needing to revert to a standard kit. I find the sounds limited (great techno and industrial sounds) and don't bother turning my loops in to rex files and them importing them. The Chaos feature keeps me coming back for more! Can't get enough of that.

So that leaves me with Guru, that can be used in Live and Logic, it is easy, intuitive and you can great simple or complex sounds and rhythms very quickly. As Jeffb ^^ already said, tons of sounds (and loads more just released on torrent). You can program them up yourself (easy with your trigger finger) or use the step grid to do it easy style! Then drag the midi info to the an empty clip slot/time line or arrange page in Logic.

At the moment for me it's got to be Guru and to be honest it's what I've been looking for, programming beats are not my strong point but I do find Guru helps me to work it out and find/make some great stuff pretty quickly.

Do try the demo it's good.

Love Logic, but i gotta agree with this. I actually kind of hate Ultrabeat. I just cant find a good flow with it.

that audiorealism drum machine looks pretty damn good

Well I've given SonicCharge MicroTonic a shot and it's ok but not really my cup of tea. I've downloaded the demo of Audiorealism's Drum Machine but yet to give it a proper go. Are there any other's I should look out for?

I like Microtonic personally, mainly cause it's a drum synth. If I'm using samples, I just use them directly as audio files in the arrange page of whatever DAW I'm using.

Ultrabeat is definitely cool as well, though my only complaint is the size of the controls, so small! This is true of all Logic's synths though IMO.

Lately I've been using Drum Racks loaded with Analog's, as soon as Abe's fix the multiple Analog's cause drop outs, issue, I think it'll be a winner.

Well I've given it another good go and it's definitely growing on me. If i could figure out how to interface my padKontrol with it that I'll buy it straight away. It's definitely got the best sound out of all the drum synths I've tried so far.

I agree with the above mentioned and I also find idrum useful for the price and simplicity.

If you want natural sounding drums then I also have to throw Addictive Drums into the pot. It's nice to have something that sounds like a real drummer and you're not wasting your time scrolling through thousands of drum samples trying to find something that sounds real. It has great mic and room emulation and also comes with MIDI patterns you can drag and drop into clips.
