OT Waves pathetic drama
I never considered Waves value for money, neither any better then other much cheaper and user friendly (mainly meaning the horrible installation struggle number of my friends went through) products. SOS thread is rather interesting and entertaining, however the newest twist- exposing some mafia practices by Waves is astonishing. It is fun to read the thread through seeing how it develops.

there is no maximizer like the l1, therefore it still is state of the art. for instance that george yohng's w1 is crap compared to it, and the others of a better quality have different characteristics. its like there is coca cola and there is other cola. coke still is fuckin coke.

7grand? laughable through and through.
I like what this person posted in that other forum:
"a UAD Extreme costs £1299 - 32 plugins
buy another 3 UAD cards (3 x project pak) = £800
so you have spent £2099 and now have 4 dsp cards and 32 plugins. Ok so you fancy Altiverb because its probably the best verb on the planet... we are upto £2500 oh and then you can buy a Mac Book Pro Laptop (2.4gigs duo, 2 gigs memory, 160gig drive, 8 x double layer dvd drive and a 256 G force card) £1,799.00. So we are now upto £4299
Lets whack on a Fireface 800 for £770 and while we are here I will whack on a Mackie Control Universal Pro for £900 and we are upto £5969.
Oh and lets add in a Focusrite isa 428 £1200 so thats £7169 or you could go for a 828 for £1700 and be like £7650
So its either the Wave Mecury pack or
UAD Extreme Plugins Set
4 x UAD cards
Altiverb
Mac Book Pro Laptop (17 inch)
Mackie Control Universal Pro
RME Fireface 800
Focusrite 428/828 Preamp
I think I know which bundle I would choose"
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Waves stuff is OK but there are alternative products that are better sounding to my ears and cheaper. You pay for the convenience of having stuff in a bundle, and the copy protection and general attitude of the company leaves a foul taste in the mouth.
And my opinion is that the L1 is an OK limiter, but more transparent alternatives exist for less money(although I agree that yohng's imitation is worse) and the L3 is dangerous in the wrong hands and often sucks the life out of a mix. The L2 can be made workable but again, novices and crack user wannabe producers just abuse the hell out of it usually. Not Waves fault, and in some ways, I'm glad that these idiots tend to leave Sonalksis and PSP Audio stuff alone !!
The best Waves plugins to my ears are C4, Maxxbass (genuine useful plugin too), Trans X and Linear Phase EQ. Of course, there are people who would say my opinion sucks donkey balls, well that's OK, each man to his own devices...
But I would take PSP's mastering compressor or Kjaerhus MPL-1 PRO or Voxengo Elephant over any Waves limiter/compressor. Sonalksis's compressors sound better than Waves too but the cost is getting up there a bit. You can buy Voxengo's paid plugins for 50-90 bucks each and almost every one of them sounds better than the equivalent Waves plugin.
Totally agree that Waves are a company resting on their laurels like Digidesign, both of whom are living in the past - and for me, the UAD-1 plugins kick the pants off most waves equivalents, so not really a valid price comparison IMHO.

Funny you should say that because I was watching a TV program called "Mark Thomas On Coca Cola" the other night and according to a scientifically controlled study of thousands of people, in double blind tests nobody could consistently tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi.radib wrote:there is no maximizer like the l1, therefore it still is state of the art. for instance that george yohng's w1 is crap compared to it, and the others of a better quality have different characteristics. its like there is coca cola and there is other cola. coke still is fuckin coke.
It transpired that, statistically, people displayed absolutely no preference and the whole Coca Cola myth is founded upon clever marketing and subtle brainwashing.
They are perceived to be the best because that's what they keep telling us - over and over again. Not because they actually are.
Which is a bit like Waves in a way.
How very astute of you radib.
Do you guys have the Pepsi Twist on The States or Europe? It kicks Coca Cola's butt big time... best drink ever...popslut wrote:Funny you should say that because I was watching a TV program called "Mark Thomas On Coca Cola" the other night and according to a scientifically controlled study of thousands of people, in double blind tests nobody could consistently tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi.
well.. of course there should be other good stuff out there....
I personally love Voxengo stuff... (especially 'soniformer'...) and Audio Damage stuff
KJ stuff rubs me the wrong way... don't know why...
Sonalksis stuff is more expensive than waves....
So...I agree good competition is good for all us users...
but I luv waves stuff...I don't care if it makes me unpopular...
It hurt a bit when I paid for the bundle... but these are great tools and I try to use them sparingly ...
managed to get them 50% off the price in the 'waves' site... I was working with a 'powercore' and had major problems with it+live/cubase/pt...
so I decided I didn't want any ext. dsps...I felt they were making my setup more complicated...
.. I do well with my cpu load so not need for extra juice...
anyways, I knew a guy who's brother works for 'waves'...
so...that was that.
anyways yes! they ARE overpriced...
but I still consider buying the platinum bundle one of the better purchases...(along with live... and my evolver...and my bass amp!!!)
I really do use them alot !!!
