Using ReWire; Recording Drums From ReDrum In Live 6

Hi there,

I'm having a problem understanding the fundamentals of ReWire and how I am supposed to use this virtual link to my advantage in Live. At the moment I have a new Reason file open with a version of ReDrum 'created'. I have put together a rough drum loop as an example, and I have opened Live 6 in the background.

Now, on my 'Audio' track in Live I have an option to select 'Audio From', and then in that list I am given both 'Reason' and 'The Grand ReWire' as an option to select. Selecting 'Reason' means that in the box below I am given the a long list of Channel numbers which seem to be grouped together in twos. What do I need to do next?

My ReDrum in Reason is running through channel one of the Reason mixer, but selecting that channel in Live yields nothing. Is there something I am missing somewhere?

I haven't used reason in a long time, but if I'm not mistaken, those channel numbers represent Reason's outputs in in the Audio Hardware device (The device at the top of the rack, right above the MIDI device). If you flip the rack around, you'll see it has a bunch of connectors (1 to 64). 1-2 is usually your soundcard's main output, but in Rewire mode, you can use them all to route individual sounds to your Rewire master.

Something I used to do is add a Spider Audio Splitter for each sound source. For example, a Kick drum would go into the splitter, then one of the copies would go to a Mixer which was left wired to Hardware Outputs 1-2. The other copy would go directly to Hardware Output 3/3-4 or whatever. Same routing for every source. That way you can work with your Reason file standalone using the mixer to control levels, then Rewire it to a master and have everything in it's own output.

not sure if I read your post correctly but you said you opened Reason first then Live?

that might be the first thing you did wrong -

open live first then Reason

the reason mixer doesn't matter as much as the router at the top of the application - make sure you're number one and two outputs are connected to something - like the Redrum or the Mixer which is connected to the Redrum

now in Live you have an audio track and in your "audio from" you should see the inputs from Reason

select 1 and 2 and you should be all good

Ah OK, I've never seen that before. It has always been in the collapsed view whenever I've used Reason but expanding it does show all the channels on the back like you said.

The light on the front is showing that it is in 'Audio Card' mode, however. How do I flip it into 'ReWire' mode? Clicking on the light doesn't change anything.

In that case I fear I am fairly out of luck anyway, as Live crashes consistently (every time) if I open Reason once it is already open. Something to do with the ReWire link possibly? Anyway, I always get the following message:

I am unaware if this is a known problem or simply down to something I have done on my machine to cause it to happen, but I suppose I'll have to live with bouncing down Reason audio to WAV files forever more.

1) Why 6.0.5?
2) What version Reason?
3) If you aren't using Reason 4, have you downloaded the ReWire 1.7 patch from the Props' site?

Yeah, I'm running Live 6.0.5 but Reason 3.0, although I do have the ReWire 1.7 patch installed.

It is a seemingly random problem - I possibly have some kind of conflict in another program or process. Ah well, cheers again.
