Ableton on Apple vs PC
I think you're right, however I hope to switch to VISTA (if I go for the PC world of course) as XP wil soon bcome obsolete, certainly on new hardware like a quad core with maybe more than 2gb's of RAM.
I don't want to remain on a old version of windows for too long, true I don't need VISTA for making music, but I'm using my comp for other things as well and I don't see any future in XP to be honest.
Hope M$ fixes that crap though.
I was looking at the markth shares yesterday between Windows and Apple, strangely (for me though), it seems that VISTA was still clmibing up whilst Leopard was slightly going down. Doesn't really mean a lot I guess, but I would have thought the opposite at first to be perfectly honest.
cheerz

Here in UK about 6 months ago apple had this poster campaign displaying a geeky office worker with a slogan "windows is a little hard to set up", and this casual dude with a slogan "apple works right out of the box". Made me laugh, how desbrate can apple be.
Truth is windows is more DIY so inovation first starts on windows then moves to apple if it's worth it as it's less than 10% of the market.
Just my 2 cence.

not sure about the innovation, I find Apple quite innovative too.ava wrote:Here in UK about 6 months ago apple had this poster campaign displaying a geeky office worker with a slogan "windows is a little hard to set up", and this casual dude with a slogan "apple works right out of the box". But I find you're quite right about the advertisement, personnaly I don't care having to struggle a bit at times with Windows, I've gotten used to it.
I don't need a out-of-the-box OS, some peeps do but I don't.
So for me that's not a pro or a con, I just don't care, I can use windows anyway and I'll always find my way out of a problem.
I think this is an incorrect assertion. XP supports quadcore and 4gb of RAM, albeit each program thread can support up to 3gb of ram, which is plenty. With those specs, XP is easily viable as an OS for at least another 2-3 years, by when Vista will likely have their shit together. If they don't, then go get a Mac, by all means.foxgonz wrote:I think you're right, however I hope to switch to VISTA (if I go for the PC world of course) as XP wil soon bcome obsolete, certainly on new hardware like a quad core with maybe more than 2gb's of RAM.

If your comfortable with PC's - you might as well stick with them IMO. Nothing wrong with XP either - working great with my dual-core laptop. If you need Vista, I'd dual-boot for 6 months or so while they sort out the 'issues'foxgonz wrote:true
my mistake on the RAM.
I'd just like to have DX10 though, nothing to do with music production but I use pc's for more than one thing
The other thing to mention is that while Microsoft has never really done a v1.0 product very well, their final versions do tend to be pretty good (except for Internet Exploder). XP was really v.3 of Windows NT. Same with Word and Excel, etc. I think Vista will probably be decent in a couple of years after an overhaul of the bloat.
sounds right indeed
I remember hating XP when it got released (poor me, how could I like WinME more lol)
Nut yeah, after some years it got to a good state.
I'm sure it'll be the same with VISTA, I wouldn't expect another OS from them, they'll stick to that one and fix the issues (the never ending story as always, but as long as it becomes sort of stable and performant I'm fine)
yup, IE is the biggest crap I've ever seen the last 2 years, and I'm polite

i may have another point for the decision.
in my opinion, Apple builds the most beautifull Designed Laptops by far, and after going Intel, they also build some of the most Powerful ones.
They are expensive, but if you look at another Laptop with similar Specs AND a quality case like IBM, they are just as expensive.
They can also run Windows, so if you have the Cash and want to buy a Laptop, a Macbook Pro will be a good choice. I don t know if it will be better than other ones, but it will be a quite good Decision.
BUT:
In my opinion, Apple builds no viable Desktop Computers at the Moment.
The prices for the Mac Pros are just mad. REALLY MAD.
And the iMac? Nice Design, but i don t want to thrash my Screen if i want a new Computer. I know many people who don t want a glossy screen. And i want to be able to change parts of my System by myself.
At this moment in Time, you can by a KILLER Windows Desktop with Quadcore and 4 Gb Ram plus two 500 GB HDD for really small money.
This Computer for about 800-900 Euro will smoke every Mac under 3 or 4 thousand Euro.
You could take the rest of your Money and buy TWO 22 inch Screens.
For under 1500, you can get a quadcore with 4 GB RAM and one TB HDD with dual 22 inch Screens.
Take a look at the Apple store and look out for a Computerr for about 1500.....
My 2 cents

thanks man, and you know what that's exactly what I've been doing the last hour.
and my first try is roughly:
- quad core Q6600
- Asustek P5KC (P35 express)
- 2*2gb of RAM TWIN2-8500 FSB1066
- 2*750gb HDD hitachi with 32mb of Cache, SATA II
- albatros gforce 8800 640mb
- 850 power supply
- 85€ case
- 35€ dvd burner
Total 1700€
and honestly that smokes all macbook pro's I'm sure...
that's a first trial, so probably can do beter, but still it gives a rough idea
