I have a 867 titanium powerbook.... i am almost 100 percent converted to Ableton 4... I am about to give up Logic, except, softsynths (impOSCar and Albino 2) that I wanted to use seem to destroy CPU with my computer. A single instance of either can overload my computer depending on the patch I use.
What are some good quality softsynths that people could recommend that wont destroy my CPU . . . ( I mess around with Buzzer , and Crystal)

Absynth drains the least from my poor little G4. (using Absynth, Tassman, Albino, Cameleon 5000, Vanguard and Tera)

buzzer is really nice. equivalent cpu usage is done by pro-53.
absolutely efficient and with perfect integration in live 4, is propellerhead reason.

Ya - try Native Instruments, some of their stuff(absynth, FM7, etc..) is pretty old and made for slower computers.
I think audiomidi.com still has some special upgrade deals.
Unfortunately, NI only has OS9 or none for most of their demos.

Under the right circumstances, Zebra, FM Heaven, and Vanguard can be lower CPU also.
You just have to watch the poly and unison settings.

You can rewire reason to live4 and transmit midi from live to reason now, you can work with audio, midi or BOTH

mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

While I can well understand by now why Reaktor is called 'bloatware', I think the synth selection offers great variety and 'value for the dollar'. Sure, some instruments and effects seem to crash as soon as you press a key, but what you have left over (Carbon, Uranus, GoBox et al. ) makes it well worth owning. There is also of course a massive user library or you can just make your own doodads.
I also run Abysnth and Tassman with no real issues.

i used to own a 12" 867mhz. i found that Pro-53, Absynth, and Reason were the most cpu effecient.

nope thats me, i hadn't logged in for that post. sorry.
yea i sold the G4 three days ago.
i needed a machine that was powerful enough to run Final Scratch, Live + realtime VSTi's all simultaneously on stage. and due to budget constraints had to sell the G4 to pay for such a machine.

speaking of, why all simultaneously? you're now moving back and forth from FS sets to ableton on the fly?
and didn't you just sell a pc lap last year to get the 12" pb?
