Live Monitoring!

Post by jake » Wed Nov 28, 2007 11:03 pm

Hi, I know this is a rather large subject but I am desperate for any advice on this! I also apologise that it isn't entirely ableton related!

When playing live my band uses processed vocals. We run our vocal mics through a laptop running ableton, through some plugins, then back out into the mixing desk. One vocal channel is a vocoder and the other involves auto-tune and a few other bits. I have managed to get the latency low without crackling etc. Around 75 samples.

The main problem is feedback!!! I can't work it out. The only way I can knock most of it out is by making the input signal low, eqing it (knocking out complete frequencys), putting a heavy gate on it, amplifying it greatly then processing it.

This seems silly to me and illogical but simply running a mic into the interface (at a normal input level), monitoring it in ableton and then back out at a standard level causes bizarre loud feedback if triggered.

If anyone has experience in this, or anything such as limiting feedback with live vocoding I would love to hear some tips!!! Thanks!

Jake
