Please Help-Midi-Reason4-Live7

I'm running a PC custom built by VisionDaw that is very powerful. I bought the Live 7 upgrade the day it was launched. New in 7 is the External Instrument-a routing utility that allows you to integrate ReWire devises (in my case Reason 4).

I have it set like this:

Midi To: Reason-NN XT or whatever devise I choose.

Audio From: 1/2 Mix L. Mix (I am not good with routing at all)

When I have this set like this and I play the Midi Keyboard, Reason plays on all tracks whether they're armed or not.

My question is:

How do I prevent this? What is the correct configuration?

You will have to disable the monitoring inside Reason, that should do the trick.

Turn off the monitoring in Reason. You can also select the hardware interface track, which is the very first track in the session.

Ken, thanks again for your help.

I checked out your MySpace-very impressive indeed. Do you compose and sing? It was done with Reason? Very cool.

Turning off the monitor with in the track in Reason isn't doing the job. I can only stop it from sound if I turn the volume down, for example NN XT down. This defeats the purpose as I am looking for a way to use Reason with in Live as though it were a VST.

Are you familiar with this new feature? I'm pretty sure that Reason will work with in the Live work flow once I get it figured out.

I'm waiting to hear from Ableton Support.

Hi,

The use of External Instruments allows not to arm the track, that is one advantage as it then allows Live to deal with latency compensation better.

What you have to do, is to route each of your Reason devices to an individual output, in the Reason software itself. Then, when each instrument has its own output, you can set in each External Instrument the "MIDI to" to one Reason instrument, and the "Audio from" to receive from that particular instrument.

Let me know if that's clear enough or if I should rephrase it.

Wow! I love you guys at Ableton! My wife may divorce me because of my obsession with this super fun software.

Could you please give me an example of how I might set up Reason and Live.

For example, if I have the NN XT, Malstrom and Subtractor selected, how exactly would I configure it with in the two environments via the External Instrument?

Hi,

In Reason, hit the TAB key, do that you see the backface of the device (watch out the bouncing wires!

). There, plug the output of NN XT to inputs 1&2 of the mixer, outputs of Malstrom to inputs 3&4 of the mixer, and the ouputs of Subtractor to the inputs 5&6 of the mixer.

In Live., create 3 MIDI tracks, each containing an External Instrument. On the first, set "MIDI to" to the NN XT, and "Audio from" to "Reason, 1/2"; On the second, set "MIDI to" to the Malstrom, and "Audio from" to "Reason, 3/4"; On the third, set "MIDI to" to the Subtractor, and "Audio from" to "Reason, 5/6"

Now, you should be able to play the Reason instruments from Live, just as if they were Live devices..

That's it! Sounds simple enough Amaury.

As soon as I get home from work I'll give it a go.

This looks to be a great way to work with Reason Within The Live work flow.

I'm very excited about this.

This post will be a big help to others as well.

Oh! And yes. Those virtual wires that precariously dangle in the rear of Reason can be hazardous!

I may have misunderstood you. Yes, I am using Live 7 and Reason 4 as well. In Reason you monitor (play) the selected track automatically. When you click on the transport track for example (sorry I said hardware interface) you are not playing a Reason instrument at that time. If you then set it up like Aumary said it should work. I am using External Instruments as well with Reason, and really like it, because you don't need a MIDI and audio monitor track anymore. Very nice feature indeed.

Unfortunaltey that didn't work. I followed your directions very carefully and re read them and did it again-is not complicated.

Are you sure you didn't mean plug the outputs of NN XT into channel 1 left & right of Reason's mixer?

Here's what you said:

However, I'm having the same problem. That is when I set up the External Instrument the way you said above-no matter which track I arm, the NN XT triggers and if I have more than one device in Reason all trigger at once.

Hi,

Sorry! I did a mistake: it's not in the mixer, in Reason, that you should plug the outputs from the instruments, but to the "Hardware Device", that should be on top of the mixer.

So, repeat my instructions, but instead of 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 on the mixer, use 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 on the "Hardware Device".

Hi,

What do you mean?

- The first problem talked about here is solved? You can now play individual Reason instruments from Live?

- Now you've got a problem with MIDI between Live and Reason? Can you describe the problem?

Hello Armaury.

I have to say I'm impressed with Ableton's support.

Actually, I regret having said that I'm disappointed with the External Instrument addition. In retrospect, it is a great improvement.

I have Reason and Live set up to the specs you described and it is working.

However, if I play (for example0 a piano patch from the NN XT and quantize (or use no quantize) to 16th notes, Reason seems to be slightly ahead of the clock. And the midi doesn't track properly.

It is so close to being way cool. Hopefully there is a fix or the Ableton engineers will work it out.
