Always look to the future, you may miss that extra vram later on as audiovisual processing relies more and more gpu, I can only speak for our audiovisual ableton plugin but the new macbook pro is a beast when it comes to core video Apples choice to move to Nvidia is a great. testing the latest Macbook pro 128mb (i think) and Just Add Music we had THREE HD movies working with audiovisual effects going!!

as for the cpu speed i don't actually think its worth it if your only using it for Ableton and a vj app like JAM as our software runs off the GPU not CPU

Any way when you bud gets it tell him to check out Just Add Music (JAM)

Mac only Just Add Music is a revolutionary audio visual DVJ tool for ableton live built by the DVJ experts and design so you don't have to do anything new (apart from loading videos) to create stunning audiovisual work and performances

Aside from Final Cut one program that requires a powerful video card with lots of VRAM is Motion, which is part of Final Cut Studio.... Motion allows real time layering etc of video but only because it uses the video card to preview & render...
check it out, I think it is a very worthy addition to a Final Cut setup
(i have no vested interest, other than using it myself)

I bought a more powerful MacBook Pro for it & also so I could have the larger screen rez built into the laptop (not tlaking about externals creens here) ie I wanted bigger than 1024 across... you have to pay a little more for it but I think in long terms its worth it....
