7.0.1: Instrument rack key fade ranges work

Post by Nokatus » Fri Dec 07, 2007 4:41 am

Edit: Meh, I most probably screwed up myself, and the fades work as they are supposed to work by design. Changed the thread title. Sorry :P

---------------------------

Simple test:

Instrument rack, a synth in a single chain. The key range is set up to go all the way from the left (C-2) up to C5. Fade range is set at full volume across the whole range. I trigger a simple saw wave with the C5 note, and I get a peak reading of rougly -1.8dB.

Now, I grab the fade range indicator from the right (C5 position) and drag it all the way to the left. The result is a ramp spanning seven octaves, with the extremely quiet end right at C5.

I trigger C5 again, and the result should be very quiet, barely audible. However, the peak reading is around -4.3dB.

Summing up: the quietest note, even in a very long fade ramp, is merely around 3.5 dB quieter than the most audible note! In this state, the key range fades are useless for actual crossfading between layers.

Edit: The chain selector fade ranges work like they should, but the key fade ranges described above don't.

Hi,

Which instrument are you using? How is it set to respond to Velocity?

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly!

I'm sorry for reporting this as a bug if it really is a velocity control by design. I'm testing with Zebra 2's initialization saw wave patch (oscillator volume and main output volume turned up).

[Edit: Just woke up after an all-nighter, wrote some crap here about how the MIDI racks already have velocity scaling, but of course it isn't the same thing, so disregard that :D]

If the instrument rack key ranges fade MIDI velocities by design, is there any way in instrument racks to configure such crossfading between key ranges which actually attenuates the output amplitude? That is, fade ranges that control the chain output levels like the chain selector's fade ranges do, but set up as key ranges. This was the operation I was expecting (having used the chain selector fades extensively before, and also having constructed Sampler multisamples which, naturally being in a sampler, approach key range fades this way).
