Comp vocal tracks?

I need to be able to comp vocal tracks. Is this available in 7? If not it really should be. It's available in the other big ones. It's the only reason I can't switch to an Ableton only system... Must be able to comp.. Basic recording...

I agree, this is really essential when recording vocals. I saw the video of Logic 8's comp recording and it looked really awesome.

It's fairly difficult to do multi-take recording in Live. Possible, but not as fluent as it should be.

Hi - I would definitely switch to using Abelton for studio work if this feature were included - I have to use Abelton for Live work and Logic for Studio.

I've been thinking about using Ableton with Cubase for comping vocals. Has anyone done this with rewire? I can get Ableton working within cubase and come vocals with that but how would I export my finished comp vocals back into Ableton for final mix down?

Put me down as another one, it's the most lacking thing in Ableton and looong overdue. This would mean more to me than 10 new effects/instrument plugins. I could actually finish a complete track in Ableton If it were possible to comp vocal tracks. As it stands I always have to rewire ableton to Pro Tools or Logic to get any serious audio recording done (or render tracks and then import into tools or logic). Bring on the comp!

I've seen various tutorials in CM and FM and looked on Logics site at the vocal comping function in Logic8 and have drooled each time. Now you could say that Apple have only just come out with this feature, which is true, but vocals have always been easier in Cubase and Logic...however I would love for Ableton to come up with something to make comping and mixing vocals easier.

As it happens. this weekend I was overdubbing some guitar tracks and when I got to the lead I thought I'd be clever and record a couple of takes. As as work around to the comping thing I automated the speaker on option on each individual take and sent the final lead to a new channel, but whilst I was doing it I though to myself - "This would be easier if I could cut, copy and paste audio from one track in the arrangement view directly to a new track and build up the best takes into one." - ok maybe it wasn't quite as concise as that, it was more, "Bugger it, why isn't the a right-click scissor tool!", but you get the idea!

As hanaleiheart mentioned, one feature that Live has that many other DAWs don't, is the ability to duplicate tracks (complete with the routing settings and plugins). Click on the track title then cntrl-D / apple-D.

Once you have your initial track set up how you want for recording, make a few quick duplicates and record on those.

OK, it's not a complete "comp takes" function, but it makes setting up tracks for recording multiple takes very quick and painless.

Yeah, the Reference Manual uses that word too, "UnFold" ... "UnRoll" would be far more accurate.
At least the arrangement looping mechanism is there to keep the multitake capturing portion fluid. There's just no good method to comp your takes

Here's my method of COMPING in LIVE, In case it helps anyone.
Legend:
> CLK = One Primary Mouse Click on 'Track Title' Target described in Single Quotes
> Quotes for keyboard operations "CTL-E"
> "LOOP" - I have the loop switch from the Clip view Sample area mapped to my Keyboard. you can click it with your mouse of course.

1) In the Arrangement view Select your desired loop range. Punch-In Activated
2) RECORD all your takes
3) CLK 'Track Title' then "CTL-D" - I leave the original track alone until I'm done

4) Delete the first clip in your new duplicate track, This is actually the very end of your recording session, or if you like, the last incomplete take.

5) Drag the left edge of the clip to the start position of your loop. This is now a nicely cut capture of your last complete take

6)REPEAT THE FOLLOWING - for as many takes as you would like to "UNFOLD"
a) CLK 'Last Track Title' then "CTL-D"
b) CLK 'new tracks clip'
c) CLK 'Loop Brace in Clip View'
d) "Down Arrow" - "LOOP" - "LOOP" , This sequence selects the previous take. The two loop selects move the start & stop markers to match the loop brace
6)REPEAT END

Now you have a nice vertical arrangement of all your takes.

7) Play the loop using SOLO to identify the desirable pieces of each take.

Mouse Drag Select these pieces and "CTL-E" to isolate and then delete the unwanted stuff
9) With SOLO off you can now preview your COMP

10) Move all your selections to one track and Consolidate "CTL-J"
11) Delete all the working tracks & the Original.
