OT: Stolen cell phones

Post by beats me » Tue Dec 11, 2007 5:01 pm

This past weekend my mother had somebody smash her car window with a rock and stole her cell phone as well as some Christmas presents, fucking asshole(s). Why anybody would leave something like a cell phone in a car EVER is beyond me. There are certain things that if I don't feel them in my pockets when I am not in my house then I feel like something is very out of balance, but that's for another topic.

Cell phones also seem to be something that the authorities are going to have a "that sucks but oh well" attitude about. But this genius also managed to place phone calls to about 3 different people locally from my mother's phone. I'm wondering if anything can be done with that kind of information.

Also part of me wants to start calling these numbers from a blocked phone at random between the hours of 2 AM and 6 AM and say nothing just to be annoying.

Or should we just suck it up and live in fear because cell phones also carry a lot of personal information and contacts? Anybody have any kind of experience with this sort of thing?

That sucks about your moms phone and especially about the presents.

Here in Cleveland, there is an on-going trend among crack heads to steal catalatic convertors from right underneath your car! They can get between $50-$150 depending on the size. More for foreign cars. A nice sized volvo convertor will get you close to $200! That's like a cool million to a crack head!

Seriously. They often times go to a dealership in the middle of the night and steal dozens of them at one time. If you don't know, your car won't even run without it and the charge to replace is upwards to $2000. You are pretty much screwed out of a car at that point.

that's fucked up, but they're creating their own market. you need a cat converter, they have one, but you only need one because they stole it.

pinche gente.

Beats Me - POST THE PHONE NUMBERS!!! Wii want to play. ;) Around what time on what day where the calls made?

I'll have to see if I can get a hold of the phones numbers. My mother may not agree to this kind of tactic.

Another thing that pisses me off is that as much as we pay for car insurance absolutely nothing is covered that isn't attached to the car itself.

I once had some asshole break into my car in a similar fashion and all he got away with was a backpack with my dirty gym clothes inside. Nice work.

Oh, they aren't selling them back to people... that would be too smart. They are taking them into junk yards and scrapping the metal. A catyl;atic convertor is a pretty heavy chunk of solid metal.

Interesting...I had a phone stolen and the local authorities used its GPS to get the perpetrator and I got my phone back from the "Richard Eater". All I did was file a report and have my phone # frozen (not cancelled). They can find that phone if they want to. It only took them about a week to get mine.

The perpetrator got some type of local ordinance violation (possession of stolen property < $300) or something - no jail, just a fine and a black mark on the administrators record book.

Made about 25 calls on my phone, too! Over an hour of talk time used, too!

Hm, I'll have to look into that GPS thing. It was a Trio which has everything else built into it so GPS should be included. I think that is built into all new phones over the last few years anyway. I didn't think about that though.

If I'm reading this page right, a cat converter for a late model XC90 can cost over US$1000....
