I'm on my third set of monitors. First two pair were Alesis M1 Actives, I then added a Rokit RP-10s sub, then the second pair died on me... Now I've got a pair of KRK Rokit 5s matched with the Sub and I am very, very pleased with the sound. Probably within your budget as well.
The Sub is really incredible. Worth every penny.

If you are just getting into this or considering your first set of audio monitors then by all means go with a set of M-Audio monitors.ThrowAway wrote:What m-audio models get positive feedback?
Many people on here will tell you not to and will slag off M-Audio (many with good reason), but many people here are also working on a professional or semi-professional level and as such have more exacting needs and more than likely their budget is built into their business so a large purchase, such as a set of high end monitors, will eventually pay for itself.
Others are just doing it for the love but have been doing it for many many years and as such have developed a more critical ear and can better justify such a large purchase.
If you are just starting out and (or) on a budget then go out and grab a set of M-Audio monitors, or something comparable, for a coupe of hundred bucks to get you started. Then, as time goes on and you find yourself requiring a more accurate monitoring system you go and buy one.
I've been doing this for about 5 years and have been using a set of M-Audio DX-4's for the past year or 2 and they suit me fine. They sound much better than the stereo speakers I was using for the first three years.
Sure, it would be cool to have something bigger and better and a set of Precision 8's really would look sexy with my setup, but what the fuck would I be doing spending $1300 on a set of monitors? If I had money to burn then sure, what the hell, but I don't, and I don't earn my living doing this (and have no intention to) so it's not like they are going to pay for themselves.
So yeah, my advice would be to grab what you can afford, get a decent controller and focus on learning the tools, your playing, and unleashing your creativity upon the world.
Just my thoughts.

i've been using alesis monitor one for the past three years and i love their nice, flat, "transparent" sound. i've just bought a new set of Adam A7's, and i've gotta say: they're great. even though they're active (self-amplified), they have sort of a "passive sound", if that makes any sense. i would definately recommend them to anyone comfortable with monitor one or ns-10, because they share the same "feel", only the A7 is a bit more revealing.
but remember, your speakers won't play their full potential if your room isn't properly prepared. from what i've learned "basstraps" should be the first step in optimizing your room. here are some links that might be of interest:

KRK VXT4 all the way.
They sound even better that older V4's, let alone Rokits.

I've also the A7 and i can only say that the ART tweeter is something of special, then obviously they can sound at full potential only in prepared rooms...i'm just studing a way to do the bass traps for my room...
