CPU spikes over 100% with only 1 vst running

Post by simon333 » Sat Dec 08, 2007 8:24 am

I have been having trouble with CPU spikes with Ableton 6 M-audio enhanced.
I contacted support and they were real nice about helping me.
I would get spikes over 100% with only 1 vst going. The audio would go to crap and then 3 seconds later come back. A minute or two would be fine then spike city again. I thought it was the vst EZ drummer but it did it on other midi tracks as well. So that wasn't it. So I changed multi core off and on, no help. Changed buffer settings and stuff, that didn't do it. Finally sent support my logs and everything was normal.
So, they said o try with no hardware not even a mouse. Still problems. Tried without the interface just using the on board mme audio. Still problems. So I had this thing tracked down to the laptop itself. Whatever it is it's IN THE BOX.... So was it hardware or software? I have a copy of Cubase laying around. If it does it on Cubase then it's not just Ableton right? So I installed it, man is it ugly to look at... Anyway.. Long story short still got the CPU spikes with Cubase. So it's not Ableton.. It's in the box... It was cruising along at 10% with the same EZ drummer playing the same beat and after a few min spike city. Same thing... So I think my 10 month old AMD Turion 64 dual core is dying about to fry or something... I've done everything I can think of, other than buying a new craptop and loading it up... What do you all think????
I'm running:
AMD Turion 64x2 1.6ghz
1GB DDR2
Windows XP pro sp2
Maudio fast track pro
Ableton 6.10 Maudio enhanced version
Also tried Cubase LE
Only 3rd party plugs used are EZ drummer, everything else is Line 6 pods and mics...

1) Turn off Cool 'n Quiet in your BIOS, but be sure to have the latest Cool 'n Quiet drivers installed
2) In Power Options (Control Panel), set it to always on

Hi Simon,

Did you solve that problem, because I was receiving the same ridiculous CPU spikes before my system went down totally. Now the program doesn't even startup, I get a Runtime error. I have tried removing the software, and reinstalling, all to no avail.

No I never solved the problem, and it's not just with midi it also does it with audio as well. Im checking out a drum track we just recorded and it gets so far and boom 200+% cpu for no reason 2 seconds later it takes off at 2-20% and runs fine then boom 200% again. I looked at AMD for quiet cool and turned it off. I tweaked the OS to free up resources and processes that may be causing it and still have the issue. I'm not so sure it's not a hardware issue with my computer. It's only a year old so it shouldn't, but it is possible.. I am going to try another comp. if I still get the issues then I am giving up..Maybe it's a common notebook issue with audio...

Do you have onboard audio on the MB? If so, it's better to disable and uninstall the software for that sound device. Theoretically they should live happily under one roof, but you know.

Your using Live 6 and I read in another post, that they have gone to binary coding, so that the program would port to the new intel based Macs...hope I haven't got that mixed up!

I tried to load 5.2.2 on my new Core 2 with no luck. I have done a lot of testing this past week with a lot of other apps that I have, and non of them have a problem. I have written to Ableton support re the Runtime error, and he wanted to see my log.txt file in the preferences folder, which I couldn't find...the last time a had a preferences file was back when I was using Delta Live, which came with the M-audio firewire box. I was a little curious about that!?
