Remote SL Automap not working in 7?
Please report back Barry Fell.
I do have a problem with my SL remote that someone could help me with.
When I am using the SL on template 40 Automap Live, the left LCD screen comes up with adjustable parameters for a Live device, ie a compressor, when I click on its device title bar. The frustrating thing is, I can only change the values with the SLs top left 8 buttons which is ok for on/off stuff but crap for anything else. I want to use the pots, not the buttons and I thought by using the 5 buttons with leds on the extreme left of SL, I could choose to do this. But they seem to be locked for scene selection/up down/play stop etc. Even if I turn one of the pots, I thought they are supposed to be active in automap.
Any clues anyone? Thanks.

the top left 8 faders are automapped to whichever plug you choose.
the bottom eight can be assigned manually as midi controllers (ie. on mine i have them assigned to various things in live) - assigned using Lives midi mapping and not novations.
the right hand sliders are for faders of tracks 1 through 8.
For more complicated plugins you have to select the 'plugin automap' template (number 38 or 37 from memory) which then uses all buttons, faders nd pots, and can easily be re-assigned using ,apping functionality of the novation 'shell'.
as far as template 40 goes (aka ableton live template) - my understanding is that its not going to change - so you're in good company.
hope that helps.
Ah right i've missed that piece of info somehow! I'll try that.GUY SMILEY wrote:Sibanger wrote:Please report back Barry Fell.

How do I use the instruments templates 1 - 30(?) though?
Also, on the automap bar below your automapped plugins, what to all the buttons do? I see no mention of it in the documentation.

Once you've created a template that you like in template 38 (by re-assigning - or accepting the default settings) you'll need to save the template. you could obviously save it over template 38 - but its better to save it to another template (e.g. 1)
when you get to the save page (accessed via the write button) it gives you the option to rename the template and select which number template number to save over.
so for example, using 38 as a start point i saved about 12 of my favourite plugins to templates 2 through to 14. templates 1 through 30 are non automap by default, hence having to save template 38 over the top of them.

Thanks Guy Smiley, But NONE of my faders work in automap template 40. Only the 8 top left buttons work.GUY SMILEY wrote:template 40 has always been like that.Sibanger wrote:Please report back Barry Fell.

This can't be normal. Do I have a problem?
Thanks.
OK that's fine but what if I want to use the templates already on 1 - 30(?)GUY SMILEY wrote:Once you've created a template that you like in template 38 (by re-assigning - or accepting the default settings) you'll need to save the template. you could obviously save it over template 38 - but its better to save it to another template (e.g. 1)

There's templates there for a load of plugins I have which look perfect to me so I don't want to save over them.
Oh right. Seems strange the way they are laid out/designed then.GUY SMILEY wrote:these can be assigned to whatever you like. they have no specific function i thinkBarryFell wrote: Also, on the automap bar below your automapped plugins, what to all the buttons do? yeah thats definitely wrong.Sibanger wrote:

Thanks.
my advice would be to reinstall the software.
another quick fix trick you could try (before resorting to resintalling the software) is to click on the 'dump' button to the right of the controller preferences in the midi preferences of ableton. this sends the default mapping to the keyboard.. you will have to turn memory protect off first though - accessed via the global button on the remote sl

OK, (I've already reinstalled the software)
When I press the Dump button to the right of the controller prefs, I get the message, "you are about to overwrite the current settings on your midi controller. Please check if its set to receive preset dumps".
I press OK and nothing happens. I have MEM Protect off. It should work, but I'm getting nothing. Any ideas? The template 40 is on channel 16. Should this make any diff?
Thanks.
edit- In Live 6.10 it all works fine. Shit, this is starting to get to me.

when you do a dump (ha ha ha ) you should see the remote sl acknowledge receipt of the info. it may be something to do with which ports you have open ? have you got it setup as per the instructions ?
its remote sl port 2 for both of the controller surfaces options and input and remote enabled for ports 1 and 2 ?
i have to admit to finding the whole 3 midi ports aspect of the remote fucking confusing.. but this could well be your problem. my luddite attitude would suggest enabling everything, (i.e all ports) and seeing if that changes anything - if it does un-enable every port one by one to work out which ones you really need.
if its any consolation i have spent all morning trying to get a motu traveller and liquid mix to play nice at 96Khz with no success

If you want to use templates 1 - 36, all you need to do is go to the template and either have midi set to 'IN' on the track, or have the track record enabled. I prefer this to plug-in automap personally so I don't need the novation wrapper to double all my plug-ins and stick 'em all in the wrong place. But if you use template 38 and want to make changes, just save them there. You don't need to save it to other templates, it all gets saved in the novation wrapper software, the actual template 38 doesn't change. Think of template 38 as having many templates within it VIA the novation wrapper.BarryFell wrote:OK that's fine but what if I want to use the templates already on 1 - 30(?)GUY SMILEY wrote:Once you've created a template that you like in template 38 (by re-assigning - or accepting the default settings) you'll need to save the template. you could obviously save it over template 38 - but its better to save it to another template (e.g. 1)

I've got everything working now I think apart from the automap for Live 7 where it splits it. Everything else is now working in 7. Weird.
Can I make a template that splits the controls like the Live template?
Went to bed frustrated, and when I got up this morning, I turned it on and it all works 100%.GUY SMILEY wrote:when you do a dump (ha ha ha ) you should see the remote sl acknowledge receipt of the info. it may be something to do with which ports you have open ? have you got it setup as per the instructions ?

I don't know why, but its strange. Oh well, I'll just go with it.
Thanks Guy for your support and input.
