I have live problems - please help me?!

Hey,

I'm finding Live really hard to work with and I don't know what else to do but post on here for help.

Here's the deal... I'm pretty sure I have the right stuff to record with:

Intel Core Duo E4500 2.20GHZ Processor
3GB RAM
Vista 32 Bit OS
500GB Hard Drive
Toneport UX1
Cole Clark Fat Lady AC2
Ableton Live 6

It's a brand new computer (which I bought to do some recording) but I am still having problems. Here are my problems;

1. CPU gets really high (up to 90%) leads to problems within Live

2. I get this weird computer buzzing martix style sound when I 'm recording into Live (sometimes) which messes up my recorded parts

3. When I try to record over a guitar loop that I have already recorded prior. The new part I'm reccording isn't in time with the old one. But, when I'm recording it along with the original it sounds perfectly in time. This doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it stays in time but then slips out the more I listen to it when looping.

Point 3 is the most annoying because I can't put together layers as they never sound together. I've made sure monitoring is set to off, which it tells you to do if you're recording guitar into Live.

My setup is simple.

Guitar > Toneport > Computer > Gearbox (toneport's sounds program) > Live

Am I really doing something that wrong in order to get these problems?

Other info:
- I have closed every other program whilst running live but I still get the weird buzzing computer sound

Ok I can't tell you what your problem is, but,

1. are you using the ASIO drivers for your toneport? the latest versions from the manufacturers website? also the latest usb/firewire drivers (don't know how your interface is connected, whichever is relevant)?

2. having done everything in (1) have you set your toneport latency to be as low as possible without getting crackles?

3. if all this doesn't work, have you tried it on XP instead of vista? don't expect vista to be reliable for another couple of years yet.

also does that weird buzzing sound correllate with your mouse movements? if so it's a power conditioning issue. get some power conditioning or (cheaper but less safe) disconnect the earth pin from your computer's mains plug. For the record I don't advise the latter if your computer has a metal case, you might end up dead.

Oddly enough, I get that buzzing too.

I never used to... until a few months ago, my internal soundcard started doing that whenever I have the a "line in" activated in ableton. Even if I try to turn my sound off (via the hardware button, which turns music in ableton off, as well as any other audio app) the buzzing persists until I turn off the line in.

Fortunately it's not a big deal for me, as I don't use my internal soundcard (I'm on a laptop) with Ableton (got the onyx 400f, love it!)... but it is annoying all the same... sometimes I'm on the go and would like to make use of the line in using my internal card and ableton, but that's been a no go. Version 6 is what I have, btw.

It doesn't matter... I've changed every setting in every which way possible... the absolute only way to stop the buzzing is to kill the input in ableton.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Here's the answers to your questions -

Yes, I'm using the latest ASIO drivers from Toneports website. It's fully up-to-date.

Yes, I have been through the latency guide and set it up to as low as posible without crackles. I'm currently running at

Driver Operating at 44100; 16 bit
Buffer size - extra small (lowest possible)
ASIO Client: (none)
Default buffer size 512
Default bit depth 16 bit

The buzz sound is infrequent and only happens at random times. It happens when I'm recording live into ableton or when i'm listening to stuff through Live and the computer seems to be under a lot of demands to play stuff, but surely 3GB should be able to handle this? To answer your question, no, it doesn't happen when i move the mouse.

Suggestions are welcome!
