Simpler/Sampler delay certain notes by 1 ms / 44 samples

Post by Timur » Wed Dec 19, 2007 11:01 pm

To make bug-tracking more easy I set up an own thread for this issue which I have already mentioned in another thread.

Whenever Simpler/Sampler play a note that is shorther than the sample that is being played by the note and the next note is following the last one without a gap/break in between then the next note will be delayd by exactly 1 ms / 44 samples. This happens both during a clip and it happens when a clip is looping a clip where the last note end at the clip end and the first note begins at the clip start.

The very first note of a clip is never delayed and as soon as there is a gap/break in between notes the next note will not be delayed. So a single clip can have both delayed and not-delayed notes which makes it impossible to compensate this delay by using Track Delay.

is this what's causing the maddening delay in using drum machines? i don't have the same delay in impulse, didn't have the issue in live 6, thought it was just something odd about my midi setup interacting with live 7. hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I don't think you should recognize this as "maddening", it's only 1 ms after all.

Hi Timur,

if the voice management runs out of voices, the oldest one is faded out in 1ms = 44smpls @ 44.1kHz sr. this can cause a delay of one ms. it should help to increase the number of voices and|or to disable retrigger.

best wishes,
matthias

Ah, that explains it. I guess it cannot be switched off, no? Anyway, 44 samples is not much of a problem I guess. Thanks for explaining this. Maybe you should put things like this into the manual or helpfile. If not I will put it into my Facts Sheet. :P

well, if you increase the number of voices yourself In Simpler or Sampler it will stop doing that.
I think the default is 6, if you need one simpler to play more than 6 notes without this note stealing coming into action then you should increase that number. It's the little box next to the 'R' release button
after doing that it will be fine.

I had this issue a while back, I wondered why my ride cymbals were behaving strangely. After increasing the available voices it was all fine

Thanks Angstrom, I am aware of the Retrigger function and number of voices. But this is not always a valid options because it will alter the sound by sound-layering and the resulting modulation. That is especially a problem when playing notes in fast succession. And since this problem only occurs when playing notes without gaps in-between there will always be sound-modulation when switching off Retrigger in these cases.

Not to mention CPU load increase by layering lots of voices.

Generally I would prefer an option to switch that fading off or have Live to it as a crossfade instead of delaying the next note.

I see what you mean.
So, in the case where you want monophonic samples you do not want to increase the polyphony to counteract this delay

perhaps a workaround for that case is to use a drum rack with the choke option activated to obtain monophony without letting Simpler do it via voice re-assignment.

that's a guess, I haven't checked to see if choke works the same way as voice assigning does.

Thanks for the hint! I haven't checked Choke at all yet and don't know what it does. But I know that Battery also offers it so it's gotta be something about rythm/beat I guess. :)

'choke' is a feature that enables voices to 'choke off' anything else assigned to that choke channel - typically like an open and closed hi-hat. With both of those assigned to choke group 1 either of them will cut off the other when it begins playing. But they wouldn't affect items in choke channel 2, the choke groups are functionally separate. If that makes sense.

Yes, makes sense, thanks! :) I knew this feature by content but not its name since I was too busy with other stuff yet and did not try to build up my own drum-sets yet. I've read through the Battery manual, but tend to remember things best when I use them. Thinking about the many many many manuals I am reading at the moment and all the hardware and software I am learning it's a wonder I can remember anything at all. My brain's gonna burst anytime soon. 8O  :?: :!:
