Wierd problem

Post by relayer66 » Thu Dec 20, 2007 10:08 am

I just upgraded to 7 and installed it. I'm using an Axiom 49 controller. When loading up a synth, there is a delay from when I hit the key to when I hear the sound.
When I start the program, it works fine, but soon introduces a slight delay between the keystroke and sound. Over a couple of minutes the delay gradually becomes longer, like 10 seconds.
This happens on all synths. The MIDI input indicator flashes immediately, but the sound doesn't come out right away. If I stop and restart the MIDI port tab, it works normally again for a few seconds.
Funny, I think I've had this problem in the past but can't remember what the fix was. Any ideas?
Other programs (SONAR) work fine.

Bump...
Can anyone shed any light on why my MIDI input is drifting?

Try changing the midi port type from DirectMusic to MME and also try setting a fixed size for Plugin Buffers (as low as 64 or 128 samples). Restart Live after changing these settings. Also try out if this only happens with Latency Compensation active or also when its inactive.

Try connection the Axiom via real Midi cables/interface instead of USB.

Try only using Input and deactivate all Outputs. There are acknowledged issues with Midi output to external physical devices (not plugins but controllers and other maybe Midi hardware).

I've tried these suggestions, and the problem continues. I've tried every combination of settings available on the Preferences page, and nothing affects the issue.
Seemingly, it's not a driver problem, and not a keyboard problem. Doesn't matter if I use ASIO (my normal setting) or MME. Doesn't matter how I set the inputs/outputs and controller settings.
I don't think it's a latency or buffer issue either. Remeber, when I first start the program there is no latency at all. It just starts to grow until after 3 minutes or so I'm looking at a 10 second delay. I've tried adjusting the preset buffer, the driver latency compensation, sample rate of my interface, everything. I've also closed Live after making all these adjustments.
I've also tried reloading Live 7 to no avail. Everything worked fine in Live 6 with the same settings. At this point, 7 is unusable for me.
It's driving me fuggin nuts, I tell ya.

I think you're changing the wrong setting. I can tell because ASIO has nothing to do with MIDI

On the MIDI tab in preferences, open each port in the lower section, by clicking on the arrow to the left side of it's name.

See where the button is, which is lit up green, and should say 'DirectMusic'??

Click on that, and it should change to orange and say "MME"

I hope on the "MIDI fact sheet" that it says the DM is not usable

;)

Hah! That was it. I clicked on the arrow to the left of each MIDI port, and changed it from "Direct Music" to "MME". Problem solved! I didn't know that option was there.
Thanks for the help!

<grumble> This really goes on my nerves now! :? I cannot tell everyone about changing this option for the rest of my life. Time to write another bug-report.

Yeah, it's bad.

It's bad that it doesn't work,

and even worse that it's set as the default API!!!
