no sync, only sound with rewire

Post by dogblessyou » Wed May 30, 2007 12:51 pm

I'm trying to slave Max/msp Runtime 4.6.3 to the Live 6.0.7 demo through Rewire.

Max/msp Runtime does not even appear as an option in the midi ports list. But it does appear in the audio track, rewireing the audio work fine.

I've tried starting the programs in different order, switching between soundcard and rewire, reinstalling rewire from propellerheads webpage. Only way I've managed to sync the programs is through midiyoke, but it's kinda unstable.

Any ideas?

I'm on a laptop with XPsp2, 1.7GHz pentium M, 512MB RAM and an M-audio FW410 soundcard.

Hello,

What do you expect to happen with the Rewire?

In the basic configuration, you should be able to pass audio from Max to Live, or from Live to Max, as they both can either be Master or Slave.

Then, if you want some sort of sync, you can use some [Rewire~] object in Max/msp in order to get transport info from Live into Max. (if I recall well).

As far as I remember, you should:

-Open Max, and choose the 'add_rewire' driver in the audio settings window
-Close Max
-Open Live
-Open Max

then Max should be slave. That is only from memory, so please, people, correct me if wrong.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I expect to be able to send sync from Live through Rewire.

I'm using a patch called mlr for the Monome (http://wiki.monome.org/view/AppMaxMspMlr), and people who have managed to sync it through Rewire tell me it should show up as an option in the Options/Preferences/MIDIsync - MIDI Ports list. But it doesn't.

In the mlr sync settings I can only choose ReWire 1, ReWire 2 etc as MIDI clock source/output, depending on how many MIDI channels I set in audio settings - and these only show up as a selection in the MIDI tracks of Live, not MIDI Ports where I can choose to send sync signal.

Hi,

If it is using MIDI sync, yes, the port should be chosen in the MIDI Preferences of Live. But as far as I know, the internal MAx Rewire MIDI port is available only on the MAc. On the PC, you would have to use another loopback device.

That said, as I said before, you could use some other object to get sync data from the Rewire master. Search about the [hostsync~] object. (I did a mistake in my earlier post, [rewire~] is to be used when Max is the Master).

Oh, that's a bummer. So midiyoke might be the best option at the moment. Maybe I can bug the mlr author to include this hostsync object.

Oh, that's a bummer. I figured the sync would go through Rewire, as it says on the propellerheads webpage:
- High-precision synchronization - complete, glitch-free sync between the two applications, with no settings to make and no parameters to worry about.
- Common transport functions - if both applications have built-in sequencers of some sort, you can play, stop, rewind etc. in any of the applications and they will both locate to the same position.
So midiyoke is perhaps the best option available for PC?
Hi,

No, as said on the Propellerheads quote, you can use the Rewire sync, as I said, using the [hostsync~] object in your Max patch, to get the click info from the Rewire MAster (Live).

the way it is done, as you describe it with the Monome, is using MIDI sync, which is a different thing. And for that, yes, MIDIyoke is a solution on the PC. But I still think the Rewire solution is more elegant and convenient.

Ok, I've done what dogbless wants to do many times...but! sometimes i don't see max/msp runtime 1 or 2 in from audio. Why is it that this works sometimes, but not others?

It's killing me...

edit.. I figured it out. had to restart max and start max first and then quit max and then start live and then start max again...realtime was messing up with max.

I initially used runtime, but recently bought max. all is fixed...
Life is Good . . .
Live 8, Zebra 2, Battery 3, Microtonic, Soundhack, Wave Editor, All Ohmforce, Trackplug 5, Kensington Expert Mouse, and a couple of cheap controllers...

Another noob here...sorry. Did the search and came upon this thread.

I'm trying to do exactly what the original post-er wants to do. Tried opening MAX/MSP runtime and with the "Auto Setup" nothing happens when I click on that. Am I missing something?

Again... trying to run MLR in Live via rewire, but cant find MAX in the MIDI tracks.
