tweaking plugins while recording?

It seems like a natural thing..you can record from plugin synths and tweak the melody you've recorded as it plays back, but it's not as easy to record the live changes you might want to make as you play/record (turning knobs, making crazy noises, etc) and as Live records? Is it possible to do this? Thanks.

I'm not sure i'm getting exactly what you want to achieve.

just arm the record mode

live will record the change.

Start by reading the manual and check into the live lessons, this topic has been pretty well covered.

It's weird because I notice that with certain plugins (bass station and polybit) the changes can be undone with edit>undo, so it's tracking them somewhere. Massive does not do this though, and none of the changes I make while recording seem to stick with any of the plugins. I'll turn knobs, but whenever I play back, it just plays from the last "setting" or place I left the knobs. It treats all the turnings as setting changes rather than organic changes to the sound to be recorded, if that makes sense.

ok, edit- it's fine when recording an entire live set or making a song - the changes are recorded for playback when i use the main record button for all tracks, but it doesn't seem to work when recording individual clips. I'll record a bassline, but can't make any live adjustments after the notes have been recorded. The notes are already there, but I can't overdub any changes to the sound and record those changes to that clip.

You can't record automation in session view, only arrangement. In session you can only draw it as a clip envelope.

I'm glad I read this. I would always add an extra audio track to record my plug-in tweaking.

Let me see if I get this right. I think I ran into the same problem.
I've got a few controllers assigned to a couple of functions of the Korg LegacyCell.

It works fine when performing live. But the moment I hit the main record button the buttons have no effect anymore! So no changes are recorded

We "solved" this problem by recording everything as audio onto a separate recorder.

hmm - is that really true? im pretty sure ive recorded plug in tweaks and volume changes in both views. maybe the overdub button has to be pressed?

You can record it in session only with certain vsti's. Not the native ableton plugins.
