Horrendous audio glitches - pure noise!

Post by darzhliebek » Mon Nov 26, 2007 10:16 am

Hi,

Sometimes, somewhere along my chain of devices the audio signal just spikes and plays white noise out constantly and takes some faffing to make it stop. When I'm auditioning a track loudly this can be pretty deafening and damn irritating!

It seems to occur primarily at the EQ Three and Reverb plugins, the signal may be fine through some of the plugins but then will just change to white noise part way along the chain. I'm pretty certain it only occurs on audio tracks rather than midi but i'm not 100% certain of that. I'm just using the Ableton plugins.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem? I'm using Live 6.0.10 (but I think the previous version did this too). I wasnt sure if it was some error when data is not read from the HD quick enough and causes the EQ/reverb algorithms to screw up.

I'm running a dual core AMD Athlon with 2Gb of DDR1 RAM (and a MOTU Ultralite - but i'm pretty certain the problem isnt related to the soundcard)

Any ideas appreciated! :)

This happenned to me live a couple of times through a very loud club system and almost deafened the crowd. After the second time, I run the rig at home for an hour or so on the same track until I got the noise again. In the saftely of my studio I could just let it go and figured out it was coming from bus A with the live reverb plug on it.
Pure 0db white noise spewing out of the return channel... possibly the loudest thing you could have from your outputs.
What I did notice is that after about 2 minutes the sound started to gradually die away which would suggest a spike of some sort setting off the verb plugin.
I just don't see how. I had to run the set for almost an hour, just looping the same scene over and over not changing anything, before it happenned.

This was on my old Athlon XP system. The macs seem immune.

The only times this ever happened to me is when the external USB drive got disconnected (thanks to a faulty cable that if you moved it 2 cm a certain way would crap out) and then reconnected.

Closing Live down and reopening it always cured the problem.

Just figured I'd give it a try here. I use the Ultralite and have had some wierd noise things happen. I found out that XP SP2 has a firewire problem, seems the firewire through-put was downgraded in SP2. There is a firewire fix on Windows website that you can install and a registry edit changing the firewire data through-put and it hasn't bugged me since. Hope this helps: http://thoughtyard.com/twiki/bin/view/M ... TechReview

Have same problem here, when automating the native reverb as a send, I get these spikes of white noise, it's horrible!

macs are for sure not immune. just started happening to me for the first time, ive had the same 8.2.2 for a while now. running macbook pro, white noise destroying my ears, usually when i press stop and then press play "too fast" (whatever that means) but that seems to be what triggers it. just thought i would throw steve jobs under the bus since someone had posted that it seemed macs are immune. they're not.
