Question about Monitoring and Recording a Midi Instrument

Hi everyone I'm new here, I'm giving the demo a spin and I really like it so far but I have a question that is probably really simple to answer.

This is what's going on and what I'm having problems with
1. I record a midi instrument and I can hear it while playing
2. Once the midi is recorded and I unarm its record button I have to switch the midi instr off of "monitor" to hear it playback
3. Here's the problem, I then want to practice on the same instrument while the recorded sounds are playing but I can't hear the instr unless I record it, and that's not what I want to do. I can switch the "monitor" button but then I can't hear what was previously recorded.

Any help?

Hello. Why not just route your intrument to a different track?

So on one track you play your newly recorded clip, and on a different track you play your instrument and listen to it.

How do I do this? I was working in the Session view originally. Like I said I'm brand new to this. I usually work with fruity loops and it plays both at the same time and Live is a totally different animal than FL.

Are you using Live instruments (soft synths) or external hardware (Midi modules)?

I tried using both an internal Vsti and the ableton instruments.

OK I tried doing this with a real instrument (guitar) as well. What I'm trying to do is play the guitar once and have that loop while I add another layer of guitar on top of it.

Here is what happened
1. I recorded the Guitar with the output going to another blank audio clip
2. The audio I recorded played while I was playing the 2nd layer of guitar.
3. Once I finished the 2nd layer (the track is still looping) only the 2nd layer continues to play and the first layer stops.

Am I doing it wrong by recording them to the same section, one underneath the other? Should I play one in a section called Guitar 1 and another in Guitar 2, rather than both in Guitar 1?

At step number 3, press the OVR button on the transport bar.

Don't use the record button on the top transport bar.

Instead, take your midi clip you've recorded and hit it's play botton in Session view.
Arm that midi track. Play along.

Also see if the clip you recorded has warp/loop enabled or not. That could be why it's not continuously playing.
