Stay on Tiger or upgrade to Leopard?

Post by substance_g » Wed Jan 02, 2008 12:30 pm

Before Christmas I remember lots of "Fecking Leopard" threads with lots of people complaining about L7 on Leopard w/ Santa Rosa.

What's the consensus now?

I just got myself a lovely new MBP (2.2 GHz) with Tiger preinstalled. It's a massive improvement when running Live :D - fantastic! It was supplied with Leopard on DVD, but I haven't upgraded yet as I'm wary of other forum users' problems with Live+Leopard. Is it all ok now, or should I stay on Tiger?

Thanks for any advice!

I have adopted a conservative behavior.
I'm still on Tiger 10.4.11. I do not see any workflow improvement by using Leopard, excepted the stacks and spaces stuff.
Having said so I would suggest to remain on Tiger for the time being watching how the situation evolves. Leopard is not perfect and it's very young. In 20 days time 10.5.2 patch should reach the download availability. You're in good shape with what you've got, don't rush in.
It's my 2 cents of course,

in my opinion Leopard is worth it for these things:

1. Productivity - stacks, spaces, and the new finder (with Music, Photos, and Movies in the side bar.... actually lists your tracks by artist and iTunes playlist) makes using stuff like Live & Peak even more easier. Also, little things like data detectors and RSS feeds in Mail just make your life easier too.

2. Boot Camp (for that crazy day when you decide you want to make music in Fruity Loops again, install it, and rarely use it (speaking for myself here))

3. TIME MACHINE (for when you fuck up something so bad you realize you hit save on the track that you started yesterday and deleted that one bit.... you can restore that track and change it's filename with a click. or restore a directory. or restore your entire machine (tried it and it works beautifully))

Finally, futureproofing. It's no where near the nightmare Vista is, and sooner than later it, like Tiger, will be the standard.

I, myself, am still running tiger since it's working well for me. I don't really need the fancy updates leopard provides and I will not upgrade until I can be completely sure that everything will work perfectly, not only live but also my soundcard (I think that's already leopard compatible) and the countless number of programs and plugs that I use.
I have leopard installed on other computers I have around and it's still a bit buggy, I have to say. I think they rushed a little bit into the release. I'll definitely upgrade when it's more stable, though.
Yup...

for everybody who wants spaces on tiger check it out:

the only problem with this app is that if you switch from it to spaces, you will hate spaces!

I updated to leopard... It's okay, nothing special.

If you use dimension pro or recycle 2.1, neither work anymore, though I'm sure updates are coming soon...

check first if your plugs and drivers would work under leopard. I have a friend that can't use her midi keyboard since she upgraded to leopard (m-audio drivers have not been published yet).

I've had Leo since it was released, but haven't installed yet. Waiting on 10.5.2 and the Rapture fix myself... also want to be sure everything's cool with my RME.

Cheers for the feedback. Think I'll stick on Tiger for a short while yet.

Leopard should already be ok for my drivers:

The Ultralite and the Oxygen both now have Leopard drivers available, and the class-compliant UC-33 shouldn't need any drivers, so I should be ok already.

Nevertheless, as Pasha suggests, might be more sensible to wait for little maturity in Leopard before making the move.

Cheers and happy new year!

I bought the Leopard dvd disc...cos it was five quid to recent Mac customers a coupla months ago...but am sitting tight with Tiger for a wee while yet since I don't see that 10.5 offers that much audio-wise.
