Max/MSP -> ReWire -> Ableton Live midi channel? [SOLVED]

Post by Tjibs » Wed Jan 02, 2008 2:24 pm

Good evening,
I am trying to link Max/MSP to Ableton Live.
Using audio, this was very simple and as it is supposed to go.
However, what I am trying to do, is make Max/MSP to generate
midi signals, that will be send to Ableton Live.
How do I do this? I have set up a Max/MSP patch with a Noteout
object, and when I select GS Wavetable as synth I can use that
in Max, but when I chose ReWire, nothing happens.
How do I set up the midi channel in Ableton Live 6 to use the incoming
midi from ReWire?

Greetings and thanks in advance,
Math.

If you are on pc

use midi yoke

it's internal midi cables.

Runs like a charm.

I don't use Rewire - but you can create a virtual midi port in Max, and turn it on in Live's preferences, and send midi back and forth that way.

Anyone know if you aren't on a PC? No MIDI is getting to Live.

I think this might involve the object midi_adrewire , but I can find no helpful references to this in manuals, help files, or online.

if you aren't on pc, i think you mean you are on a mac?

anyways os x has the IAC BUS built in. its like virtual midi ports (like midi yoke). you can add as many as you need under audio/midi setup.

i wrote this walkthrough for using the monome with ableton, the first part of it covers setting up the IAC bus. just ignore the rest.

http://wiki.monome.org/view/ChuckMonoab ... e6SetupOsX

anyways do that then set max to send to the IAC BUS and ableton to receive from it.

I'll try that, thanks. I'm actually using it with a 256, myself.

The thing is, I read somewhere that somebody felt the timing was awfully loose on the IAC MIDI bus, and that rewire was much tighter. They were talking about Logic though, and did express that Logic might be the culprit...

...or just create a midi port in MAX, as many as you like...

;SM midioutport virtualport1

- from memory.
