Announcement: OSCulator 2.5

Post by tuscland » Mon Jan 07, 2008 11:15 pm

Hi!

I am pleased to announce the release of OSCulator 2.5, a software that helps to use the OSC protocol on Mac OS X.

It is designed for all OSC controllers, but you can also natively use the Nintendo Wiimote and 3Dconnection's SpaceNavigator. You will be able to control other software or devices with OSC, MIDI, Kyma Firewire, and also control Mouse or keyboard.

This version adds, amongst many other improvements, the ability to get data from the 4 tracked points in the Wiimote. There is also a sample patch that demonstrate the ability to play with the Wiimote Live instruments, and control effects assignments with the touch of a button.

Please take a look at http://www.osculator.net for more information.

Best Regards,
Camille Troillard

Hm, I'm kind of surprised nobody really jumped on this since it's a subject that seems to come up a lot in the complaint files in regards to Ableton.

Me? I have no idea exactly what it is or what I would need it for.

I tried to use it with the Wiimote and Live, but couldn't figure it out and got distracted with other stuff. I'd like to take a look at it again. What are other people clamoring for OSC in Live for, I wonder . . .

That's what i would like to know. No OSC support seems to be at a lot of people's deal breaker list only dwarfed by it's second cousin, no automation support past the 128th parameter.

You want affordable OSC controllers? Then get a company like Ableton to implement OSC. M-audio will be on the case like flies on shit.

Why OSC? Try sending clip names over MIDI...

If you have never used OSC its kinda hard to realize how you can use it...Way diff than MIDI. Think of the fct that MIDI is one Byte at a time and OSC is sent Via Network Packets...

With OSC you could easily find out the name of the selected clip on the track named BasZ_FarT... Then you could ask if there is a clip next to it... You could also ask how many bars the clip next to it is... What is its Time sig...Are its transients on point ( OK thats a pretty good OSC Implementation ).

With OSC you can Find a parameter named Yum Yum and tell it to go from 0 to 123987 over a course of 64 bars...

In this thread someone mentioned a monome. With a monome all you have to do is send it a /clear messsage...
and all its lights will go out...
With MIDI you would have to tell each and every light to go out...Not the end of the world but you can see there is a better, more modern way...

I think its awesome that peeps like Camille Troillard are promoting ( and doing really cool stuff ) with OSC but until big companies realize that many requested things can easily be done with a nice OSC implementation ( or a Scripting or OO Lang Implementation :P , or the fact that MIDI is just not cutting it anymore, OSC will just be a Taboo type of witchcraft...

Soooooo can this little program do something with the monome? All the hype here seems to be about the Wii remote which I find about as interesting as drinking milk with a fork. Can somebody write an app. that will allow my car alarm remote to launch clips while popping my trunk?

You are right, beats me. Wiimote control is about as exciting as watching your friend play a video game. I realized I have more fun manipulating a filter cutoff and resonance with my laptop mousepad! I think I'm sticking to looping my real acoustic instruments and saying fuck all these attempts to make nerdy computer music look cooler on stage. And I would much rather watch milk being drank with a fork than watching someone launch clips with their car alarm remote . . .

Just downloaded this, I look forward to checking out what it can do. Can't believe I haven't heard of it before, I own all 3 things that have sample patches made!

I'm not dissing anybody who enjoys the whole Wii thing but I just think there is an over excitement of connecting wireless gizmos with no practical purpose other than to make friends go "neat!". I'm also not a gamer and if I were the Wii system would be last on my list. That should tell you something.

Although, I do think I saw a video of somebody using Wii remotes to air drum. If you could get those things to somehow air play a whole kit based on the spacing of a real drum kit then I think that would be pretty cool. But causing filter sweeps while it looks like you are doing the YMCA dance? Not so much.
