drop outs live 6

I am having problems with drop outs. I am using a Mackie 1640 onyx fire wire board trying to record 16 channels at once. The Mackie board has 2 firewire ports 1 going to my laptop the other going to external hard drive.

My system,

Compaq r3000 pentium 4- 2.80 GHz, 1.12 GB of RAM, 80 GB HARD DRIVE with 15 gb left. 5400 RPM

I am also using a LaCie external harddrive 320GB, 7200RPM

CPU is showing about 10% when recording

I am using complex mode to record.

Sending files to the external hard drive.

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong or right?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Is your power scheme set to "always on" in your power options in Window's Control Panel? If not, do that first.

You're also getting towards the minimum that Windows needs to see free as far as empty drive space goes. Windows absolutely needs to see 15% free, and prefers 25% or more.

My power scheme is set to Laptop. You suggets that I use the "Always On" mode?
I will turn on the "Always On".

About the drive space I am sending it to the external that has 320gb or does it still go thru my laptop drive first?

Always use always on for any audio production, on either a laptop or desktop. Otherwise, any processor power management will come into play.

As to your second question, Live (the program itself) and your OS are on your internal drive...

I had a lot of problems with Live 6 where the audio would dropout every minute or two. It didn't matter if I was recording or not, or how many plug-ins I was using, or the number of tracks. The glitches were random.

I finally fixed it by disabling the power management features in the BIOS, increasing Live's process priority, and disabling my wireless adapter while using Live.

Hopefully this will help others as well.

so how do I disable the power managment features in the BIOS? Is that the same as I have all ready done which is to turn off the laptop power scheme and put it to "ALWAYS ON"?
