I've got a copy of Ableton Live 6 (LE, bundled with one of the M-Audio products I purchased), and I'm having an issue with Live dropping/not playing incoming MIDI data. My setup is such:
Alesis DM5 (Drum Brain) -> MIDI Cable -> M-Audio Fast Track Pro -> USB2 Cable -> Dell Vostro laptop
M-Audio Axiom 25 -> USB2 Cable -> Dell Vostro laptop
Since there is a four channel limit on the LE version, I've got a click track (WAV), backing/DAT track (WAV), Impulse (receiving incoming v-drum data via MIDI) and DirectWave (receiving incoming note data from Axiom 25).
What happens is the drummer will play a simple beat, and there will be no problems. If the beat gets busier (think blast beats) or if the keyboard starts to be played, MIDI notes will being to drop/not play, both from impulse and the VST. I tried removing Directwave from the project, but no go, Live still drops notes. Tried removing everything but Impulse, and it still drops notes on busy drum passages. Tried running just DirectWave, and that also drops notes intermittently.
Latency is at 256 samples (5 ms), and I cannot really go lower without losing the responsiveness on the drums. It doesn't appear to be a CPU issue, because even with spikes, the meter maxes out at 17%. Shouldn't be a RAM issue, I've got 2 GIGs of physical memory. I tried running the V-drums to the MIDI in on the Axiom, and notes still drop.
I know the computer/gear combination works, because I can get everything to work in my native host (FL Studio), but FL is not a viable option for live performances (due mainly to load times). Ableton Live seems like a perfect fit (especially if I can get video working under this setup as well), but I need to fix this issue of notes dropping.
Any suggestions?

Try downloading the Live demo, which is fully functional (except save). Both v6 and v7 are on the website

If you are thinking of buying Live, you will (I assume) be buying Live 7... I wouldn't trust an old version of Live6LE to accurately represent Live 7.
