Re: MIDI Mapping and its possibilities

Post by Isomer » Thu Jan 10, 2008 12:40 am

Hi there,

This might be an obvious question but I've searched the manual high and low.
Also, a guy at Guitar Center said "Yeah, what you want to do is possible. Can't
remember how you do it though." Classic.

Here it is:

Is it possible to midi-map a button and make it trigger of simulteneous automation moves, controlling more than one thing at once?

Example: Instead of mapping a button on my Trigger Finger to just cue a loop, can I have it cue the loop, cross-fade two tracks at a pre-specified speed and then turn an effect on in another channel?

I'm looking to map buttons to do more things than I have hands for at certain key moments in my performance.

If this is possible, can it be done with Live alone? Do I need some other software?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Use different Memory banks and even in the same bank you can use one knob,fader,controller,etc... to do several things at once.

If for some reason it can't, would it be possible to run all those effects you're after and then render that sample to sidc so the loop you're triggering is everything you would otherwise be wanting to do? You can then loop it back in to the crossfaded track at the right point.

Wouldn't work if you've got various tracks you're working with, but if it's one specific one, then you're away.

This suggestion comes from a techibackground as opposed to specifically music related, when I worked in midrange systems we'd try anything to make life easier :)

Do this and a WHOLE lot more using virtual MIDI buses and dummy clips. No other software needed on a Mac, but you'll need MIDI Yoke (free, I think) on a PC.

I use the same MIDI controllers and Live-clip sequences for audio, video, and lighting, with one button or knob often doing many tasks across multiple instances of Live at once.

Tie them in with Follow Actions and MIDI effects and the possibilies are even greater.

A forum search should help you out.

Thanks for the reply from the three of you. I've done searches for 'virtual midi buses" and "midi yoke" and I'm not coming up with anything.

Surprising that I always come up with something no one seems to do.

I just need to press a button and have it do multiple things at once--things
more complicated than a follow action.

Press a button and it cues the following:

cue a clip.
turn on effect rack on track 7.
cross fade track 2 with 3 at a pre-specified speed

The reason I need to do this is because it is for a strange kind of theater in which
I'll have my hands full making sound effects with a prop while I need my pre-built
sounds to suddenly do their thing (cross-fade two ambient locations) and then be ready for me when I need to talk into an effects mic etc.

I work on a MAC. Any specific forum posts or articles about this would be really
helpful. Also, any vocabulary I need to help search would be great. What is this
called that I am trying to do?
