Setting up a new computer. AMD Phenom vs. Intel quad.

Post by Massi » Fri Jan 11, 2008 3:02 pm

Hi! I'm upgrading my trusty old amd athlon 3000 to a quad core platform. Amd or Intel.

My soundcard is Rme digiface pci.

What is the best motherboard(chipset) for the digiface.

Does anyone have an Amd Phenom based DAW around here?

Any tips are welcome.

Thanks.

the best bang for the buck at the moment is probably the Quad 6600, as it overclocks to 3ghz very nicely with an aftermarket fan.

Nothing wrong with the phenoms either!

Get the Q6600, i have had amd chips since the k7 athlon, until I got a q6600 in january. Intel is just faster today.

the quad 6600 is a good chip but i'd get a Q9550, the Q6600 will overclock better though if you want to go down that route, the Q9550 runs cooler and should be marginally quicker.

Do I get it right that all of this is just about power? Because a Phenom-based system would be cheaper and more than enough for me - coming from a 1.2GHz iBook that cannot even play one track of the benchmark-thread…

No one?

Now if I do go Intel, what about these parts:

Mainboard: Intel DP35DPM
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Graphics: MSI RX2600PRO-T2D256EZ
Memory: Kingston ValueRAM DDR2-800

I wasn't thinking about OS X, but of course I would not mind the possibility to run it.
