Quick Drum Rack Question!

Hey Guys, Could anybody help me with my drum rack?
I'm wondering if it is possible to make a sample play all the way through by just hitting a pad once without having to hold it down. Also, why are my pads not velocity sensitive? It seems as though my samples are playing all at the same level, no matter how lightly I hit them (velocities ARE varying, but volume levels are not changing). Should I just be mixing them after I play them?

I'm using an Axiom 49. I am going to get a Akai MPD 24 pretty quick.

You can make the sample play all the way through by adjusting the 'release' knob, and adjust how velocity sensitive the pad is by adjusting the 'velocity' box.
